In 1951, a group of friends from Monterey Park pooled their money to start the Coffee Institute of America (CICA). This organization helped promote and grow the coffee industry in Monterey Park. They also started to purchase and roast their own beans. Over the years, CICA has become one of the most influential organizations in the coffee world. Today, there are over 10 cafes that sell roasts from CICA’s archives. These cafes offer different flavors of espresso, latte, cappuccino, macchiato, or churros with each cup costing around $5-10. While it can be difficult to find a straight up original CICA roast today due to demand from customers all over the world, it is still an incredibly important part of Monterey Park’s coffee history!

Monterey Park is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 106,859 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Diego and is bordered by Interstate 10 to the south and east, Monterey Park Boulevard to the north, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park to the west. The community of Monterey Park was established in 1912 as a small farming village on Rancho Santa Fe de las Aguas. By 1915, when it became part of San Diego County, Monterey Park had a post office, school system, and two churches. Youngblood bought land adjacent to present-day Carlsbad Caverns National Park which he used for his farmstead known as "Youngblood's Valley". In 1927 he donated 4159 acres (2 km²) including today's Monterey Park neighborhood to the park with an understanding that it would be used for public recreation purposes only. This land package included a dam and reservoir that would create Lake Elsinore national recreation area while also generating electricity from water turbines which would power homes in Monterey Park until 1967 when all overhead wiring was eliminated due to concerns about potential cancer risks from high levels of radioactivity close to nuclear plants
