Monterey Park, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 66,814 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Diego County and the 12th most populous city in California. The Monterey Park area was first inhabited by Mission Indians. After Mexican independence from Spain, Alvarado built Fort Point on an island near what is now Harbor Beach in 1821 to serve as a barrier against American expansion into California. In 1846, following the Mexican–American War, Mexico ceded California to United States of America under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of this treaty, Mexico reserved parts of central and eastern San Diego County for US use as well as Monterey Park. The community developed slowly until World War II when it grew rapidly due to wartime demand for military housing and manufacturing jobs in nearby Imperial Beach and El Cajon. During postwar years there were large-scale developments such as El Camino Real (now known as I-5), Clearwater Street/Highway 15 eastward from downtown and Rosemead Boulevard/US Route 101 westward from downtown which increased population densities by up to 20%. However these projects did not contribute significantly to growth or employment within Monterey Park proper; rather they generated suburban development around them including La Mesa on the eastern edge of town and Carlsbad on its western edge which continued even after those areas lost their post-war populations core businesses or closed down entirely due to lack of redevelopment opportunities between 1945 and 1980s (see also: "Urban decline: The situation facing major URBAN communities across North America" by Sheldon Richman). In recent decades there has been renewed interest among developers in developing inner-city neighborhoods adjoining metropolitan areas outside Los Angeles orSan Francisco Bay Area due to new economic opportunities created by advances in technology and international trade links particularly with East Asian cities like China and South Korea that are increasingly becoming global capitals with higher levels of joblessness compared with traditional manufacturing base cities such as Detroit or Cleveland Ohio; however no comparable renaissance has occurred for inner-city neighborhoods adjacent to larger metropolitan areas other than Monterey Park Proper despite dramatic increases seen recently for both median home prices inside Metropolitan Los Angeles counties (Upper Midwest) relative to Greater Sacramento Valley counties during same time period while Inner City OaklandNeighborhoods adjacent thereto have experienced significant Decline(See also: "Losing Ground? By the 12th century AD, it had become an official beverage at various Buddhist temples throughout Japan – making it one of the most popular drinks available on the continent at that point. And by 1500 AD, maga coffee had reached Korea – where it soon became a mainstay in their wartime diet (and later used as part of traditional medicine). Throughout these years, however, different regions adopted their own version of maga coffee (often featuring stronger flavors or different brewing methods). Eventually, however, all variations would eventually be blended together into a single brew called "maga." The first European tosight Monterey Park was on July 20, 1826 when Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza passed through on his way from Santa Cruz to Mexico City. The land for Monterey Park was donated by Governor Pio Pico in 1887. The name Monterey Park comes from the Molteno Hills just east of town and called "Mormon Hill" after Brigham Young's farmstead thereabouts. In 1896, Parade Magazine listed Monterey Park as one of America's ten most beautiful small towns. In 1906,monterey park opened its doors to the public with an elegant new Recreation Building designed by architect George Witte that cost $450,000 dollars (equivalent to $ million today). It housed a gymnasium, tennis courts and a swimming pool which at that time was some of the largest and most luxurious in North America. The city hosted its first Olympic games in 1932 and became an important stop on the road between Southern California and San Francisco during these years. A new stadium was built adjacent to downtown in 1936 but it closed due to World War II bombing raids Allied forces made during the war. Afterward many local businesses moved out into newer areas such as Midtown or East Village while much of what used to be downtown sedan been destroyed or converted into office buildings or other commercial properties including hotels such as The Beverly Hilton which still stands today across from Parkside Drive housing several high-stakes golf tournaments over recent years since purchased by Live Nation Entertainment who are also developing a new ballpark nearby – set for completion in 2020 - likely named after then Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa
