The Monterey Park Marine Museum (MPM) is a nonprofit museum located in Monterey Park, California. The MPM was founded in 1984 by Dr. Harry H. Schaefer and Jane E. Kappeler as the Monterey Park History Center. In 2006, the MPM moved to its current location on Cypress Avenue in Monterey Park and opened its doors to the public. The MPM is home to more than 2,000 items relating to marine history and culture from around the world.
Monterey Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 54,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Monterey Park had a total area of 20 square miles (50 km²). The name "Monterey Park" comes from Rancho Monterey de la Jara, which was granted to Bernardo Yorba by Governor Don Antonio Vallejo on October 15, 1821. The grant included land for an town and surrounding rancho. On November 15, 1825,Acting Governor Pio Pico named it after Mount Diablo in Northern California. Yorba donated land for a public school and well system in 1892; these two structures still stand today within the boundaries of Monterey Park. In 1896, Dr. George Washington Smith founded what is now known as Western Medical School at 8751 Whittier Boulevard with his wife Jessie Fenton Smith in memory of their son Washington Hinton Smith (1865-1941). In 1923 he made another donation to Western Medical School that would lead to its current name: University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus – Monterey Park. In 1957 Monterey Park voters passed an ordinance desireing that all municipal services be provided by one municipality rather than having them divided among three municipalities as they currently are. This ordinance created City Hall and City Services Department - both located within City Hall Annex which also houses fire departments and other essential municipal services not housed withinCity Hall like streetlights or water meters! On July 1st 2006 City Council passed Ordinance No. 06-060 amending Code Ward 10 §§ 5-303 through 5-309 to add 210 new residential units on 16 acres annexed from portions of unincorporated areas east of I Street including parts of Walnut Creek Canyon bound by Porter Road/Canyon Road/Foothills Boulevard until Oil Field Rd., those annexation being effective immediately upon passage thereof subject to applicable State Planning Requirements; development per lot shall be $145/$225 & no single family homes may exceed 3 ½ stories except where siting allows for such height; all lots must have Completion Date set prior thereto pursuant to state law prior approval given by Planning Board; right Of First Refusal will be granted only upon request by developers who have met all requirements set forth herein; this Ordinance becomes effective on July 1st 2006 As part of Measure R (2006) approved through voter initiative Doc 937872 – Redevelopment Authority Agreement between the City and Pasadena Community Development District (PAD) relating thereto – annexation occurring adjacent to I Street between Porter Road/Canyon Road/Foothills Boulevard untilOil Field Rd.– parcels include .27 acre @$125K with potential for .75 acre @$175K additional value depending on production potential – this parcel became effective immediately upon passage thereof subject to applicable State Planning Requirements subject thereafter

The city also attracted businesses and residents from nearby cities, such as Culver City and West Covina. By 1910, Monterey Park had reached its peak as an important commercial center within Southern California. However, World War I interrupted all these growth efforts; after the war ended, businesses retreated back into their original neighborhoods or relocated to other smaller towns in Southern California. However, by 1920 Monterey Park again had achieved widespread popularity due to new developments like retail stores (including a Sears department store), movie theaters (the old RKO theater being demolished in 1925), nightclubs (such as The Palladium), and apartment buildings (such as 1640 Pima Street). Despite this continued prosperity – which coincided with increased racial integration – social unrestrained by economic realities led to increasing violence that plagued many Southern Californian communities during this time period (. . .) In 1924–1925 another massive redevelopment project occurred which added thousands more apartments and shops onto Pima Street; however tensions between black residents living near white merchants continued unabated until after World War II when they were gradually integrated into local mainstream society
