Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It was established on December 4, 1887 by Donation of Land from the Monterey Park Company. In the 1920s, the city became one of Southern California's most populous with large concentrations of African Americans and Latinos. The population reached 100,000 in 1960 and 200,000 in 1990. The city is now estimated to have a population of 300,000 people. The area that would become Monterey Park was first inhabited by Ohlone Indians who ranched there for food during Warm Springs Period (1542-1676). On December 4, 1887, the donation of land from the Monterey Park Company to create what would become Monterey Park included: 351 acres (1 km2) of what is now east Pasadena Avenue; 524 acres (200 m2) of what is now south Pasadena Avenue; and 1 acre (0.4 km2) of what is now north Pasadena Avenue. In 1892–93 two small towns were organized within this new territory: Ohlone East and Ohlone West. These towns failed because they lacked water access or transportation links to other settlements in southern Los Angeles County. In 1916–17 a larger town called Carson City was established just east of present day Carson Road and northeast of present day Pico Boulevard near Pershing Road so as not to conflict with Ohlone East's claim to Carson Valley which lay between them and their traditional hunting ground including present day Mecca Hills Regional park on the eastern edge of town and parts of downtown Carson City today such as Civic Center Drive/Pico Boulevard intersection where Pershing Road meets Lake View Drive: Carson City had an estimated population exceeding 10,000 residents when it first formed but it only achieved growth after incorporation into theCityofMontereyPark on November 24th 1930 at which time its name changed from Ohlone EasttoMontereyParkonJanuary 6th 1931 . In 1924 Mayor Harry Wohlke declared June 30th City Holiday because Ofmonterey Park's ties with World War II Veterans Affairs Hospital which then stood as a reminder that “the sacrifices made by our brave friends are not yet forgotten” In 1957 Mayor Frank Price proclaimed May 5th "Monterey Park Day" in commemoration of all those killed or injured in touch with Monterey Park during World War II
