Monterey Park was originally named El Cajon after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and his forces who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first known permanent settler in what is now Monterey Park was Manuel Nieto and his wife Juana on October 3, 1853. They acquired three acres (1 km²) of land east of present day Highway 101 and built a cabin from logs they found driftwood in.) In 1857, José Estrada Enciso purchased additional land to the north for $2 per acre (0.50 ha). He built a rancho there which he called Rancho Enciso y Costilla. Josefina Márquez de la Vega moved into this house on July 15th, 1860 with her four children: José Maria Márquez de la Vega (1860-1935), Pascual Márquez de la Vega (1862-1905), Manuel Álvarez Ramos (1865-1924) and María Antonia Zambrano Zúñiga y Valdés (1868-1945). Rancho Enciso y Costilla became one of the largest ranches in southern California with 575 acres or 20 hectares when it was sold to Lorenzo Reyes on November 4th 1865 by Governor Edmund Sanger for $10 per acre or 2¢ an hectare ($3/acre). After years of hard work by its owners, Rancho Enciso y Costilla reached its peak production during World War II when it produced over 100 metric tons of fresh fruits and vegetables per year.- -During World War II much produce came from Rancho Enciso y Costilla's 50 acres (~16 hectares) under irrigation through 10 miles (~6 kilometers) long tunnels dug under hills just south of town.- -After surrendering to US troops following World War II, many landowners were arrested and executed as war criminals including rancher Lorenzo Reyes.-- -Today most people know about only a tiny percentage of ranch life because so much has changed since then.
