Monterey Park is a city in Southern California. It is located in the San Gabriel Valley on the Monterey Peninsula, about 20 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The population was 131,752 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Monterey Park were Spanish priests and missionaries who arrived in 1769. The following year, Mexican traders and soldiers founded a Mission San Francisco de Asís (now part of Pasadena) on Monterey Peninsula. A mission chapel and graveyard were built there in 1821. In 1835, Mexico ceded California to the United States after its war with Spain. As part of that treaty, the U.S., through Rancho Santa Fe de las Pulgas (later Rancho Santa Fe), acquired adjacent land including much of what is now Monterey Park. In 1869, as part of an effort to build railroads through this area, American entrepreneur James Irvine developed land east ofalleyside Boulevard for $10 per acre ($). At first he called his new development “Irvine” but it soon became known as “Monterey Park” because it adjoined the existing town of Monterey on one side and Industry on the other (the same name was given to nearby Daly City later). The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to wartime production by Boeing and other electronics companies located thereabouts. post-war growth slowed until the 1980s when suburban sprawl began spreading out into adjoining neighborhoods such as Northridge and La Jolla among others

Monterey Park is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 146,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. Monterey Park was founded in 1887 by Missionaries of Charity and became a city on December 12, 1912. The original name for the city was "Amarillo". The City of Monterey Park boundaries are: east to Interstate 805 and west to State Route 163 (CTA Wilson Freeway). The history of Monterey Park can be traced back to 1887 when Missionaries of Charity established a convent there after fleeing Mexico after independence from Spain. The convent soon grew into an Americanized French Catholic community that functioned as a satellite town for downtown San Diego until 1912 when it became its own independent city under the name "Monterey Park". In 1925, the City Council annexed portions of neighboring Scripps Ranch which then formed another annexation within three years. In 1936, voters passed an ordinance designating areas near El Cajon Boulevard and I-5 as parklands for future use by the city without having to go through formal annexation procedures; this led to what is now known as East Monterey Park occupying lands now located within City limits south of SR 163 / Centinela Avenue while West Monterey Park extended beyond El Cajon Boulevard past I-5 and took up land now located withinCity limits north of SR163/Centinela Avenue. Today these two sectors make up most of the present day City Limits with some overlap extending into adjacent unincorporated areas lying just outside both limits including parts of Eastmont Village popularly referred to as "Southwest corner" between centinela Ave./SR163 & PCH/I-805
Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 68,031. Monterey Park was founded in 1887 by Captain John Swanton and his wife Eliza Bicknell as a small rural community on the edge of present-day Monterey Park. In 1930 it became an incorporated city and served as the seat of government for all of Los Angeles County until 2000. The original town site was located on what is now Monterey Parkway just east of Interstate 5 and north of Center Street. The name "Monterey" was given to the area by Captain John Swanton after he crossed into Alta California from Oregon on September 17, 1877. He first sighted Mount Pico (now known as Mount Wilson) from his vessel "Norfolk". On November 5, 1887,Swanton donated 160 acres (70 hectares) at what is now northeast corner ofmonterey parkway and south side of center street to be used for a new town site. On December 14th,1887 Captain Swanton's wife Eliza Bicknell gave birth to their only child USN Pensioner Mary Alice at home also named after her father's donation land parcel 4 miles west on monterey parkway opposite where we live today! On January 1st 1889 when City Council meeting took place they decided to change the name from "Monterey" to "Montreery" because that is what their Major General who represented them in Sacramento called them! The current spelling comes from language guide which said that this was done phonetically with an S sound like Spanish "sir", not with an H sound like English "shir". So if you say things like 'Mendoza' or 'Santiago' your mouth will say 'mendozah','and if you say things like 'Peralta' or 'Lopez' your mouth will say 'peraltah','etc'. Oh well... . . . ." It should be noted that even though this happened back in 1889 (!), Mayor Harry Brown did approve the change! It wasn't until 1907 that water began being piped into town so residents could have potable water which arrived in big drums throughout 1908! And finally electricity came through telephone lines in 1912!!! In 1923 newly built high school opened here with then rich students coming here looking for better opportunities than they had back home. The schools district merged with others around LASD so by 1925 there were no more public schools open outside central LA!! However today many kids still attend private schools although most students living here attend public school too since it's cheaper$$$$$$$. We are one big happy family!!! circa 1925
