Monterey Park is a city located in the Monterey Peninsula of California, United States. The population was 106,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greater Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name "Monterey Park" first appeared on a map in 1846 as part of the Rancho San Rafael grant to José María Escobar y Ulloa. Monterey Park was established on May 17, 1887 by John Waddell and James Hutton as a town in Monterey County. The name derived from Mount Pleasant which stands in its center. In 1933, portions of Montebello were annexed into the city making it even larger with a total population of over 6,000 people In 1942, during World War II, Japan set up Camp MacArthur in nearby El Sobrante after American forces invaded Japan without warning Japanese civilians or military personnel residing there about the plan and without informing them about U.S plans for war against Japan Montebello became an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II and most residents were ordered to leave their homes on December 7th 1944 when USS Missouri bombed Hiroshima killing all but 5 Allied naval officers including Admiral Yamamoto who escaped alive All male citizens between 18 and 55 years old were sent to work on processing plants across California while womenfolk took care of children while men went off to fight which resulted in many husbands disappearing into active duty service never to be heard from again On March 15 1950 Local voters passed an ordinance declaring that all citizens regardless of race or color are equal under law and surrounded themselves by white police officers
