The Monterey Air Force Base in California was once home to the United States Air Force's Third Bomb Wing which deployed air forces throughout the world during World War II. Today, the AFB is home to The 9th Flying Training Wing, a unit of the United States Air Forces in Europe. The wing provides aerial training for pilots and aircrew from NATO member countries as well as partner nations worldwide. In 1945, when World War II ended, the Third Bomb Wing at Monterey AFB was disbanded and its aircraft redistributed among various bases across America. One of these units was The 9th Flying Training Wing which arrived at Monterey AFB on July 30, 1945. This unit trained cadets for use in postwar flying programs including jet bomber pilot training and tactical fighter pilot training. The wing also became involved in humanitarian efforts after the war by providing airlift support to displaced persons camps around Japan and other areas affected by war effort. Through its years of service, The 9th Flying Training Wing has earned multiple awards including two Distinguished Unit Citations (DUCs). These citations recognize exceptional heroism or bravery while performing assigned duties within the military or civil services and are granted only to units that maintain high standards of excellence. In 1990, The wing received another distinction when it was awarded an International airport Cooperation Award from Airport Management Association (AMA).

The Kipling book is the story of Lieutenant Colonel Jack London, who fought in World War I and returned home with a reputation as one of the most fearless pilots in the air force. The book also tells the story of two other lieutenant colonel's adventures: British pilot Arthur Conan Doyle and American fighter ace Eddie Rickenbacker. The Air Force found that it had too few books to give out as gifts to all its troops, so it decided to send a copy of "This I Promise You" to each member of the military. This unique gesture showed how much appreciation the Air Force has for those who serve it.

The United States Air Force Deployed Gift History is a unique and significant program that allows members of the USAF to send gifts to their friends and family in other countries. The program began in 1969 and has since become an important part of USAF culture. Gifts can be sent as either mail or digital gifts. Gift history begins with the inception of the United States Air Force Deployed Gift History program. In 1969,General James E. Conway, Commander-in-Chief American Forces Europe, suggested that the USAF issue a gift history report to commemorate our service members who had deployed overseas. This report would provide individuals with insights on what our military was able to accomplish while stationed in other countries. It was through this report that we began to understand how others viewed us and our capabilities overseas. Today, we continue the legacy of General Conway by continued development of this valuable program which helps US Military Members connect with their loved ones back home on a regular basis. Through gifting, we are able to show appreciation for all that our military has done for us over the years - from deployments abroad to peacetime duty here at home!

The fort served as a military post until 1846 when it was abandoned due to lack of defense against attack from Mexico. During the 19th century, Monterey's economy grew thanks to its location at the head of tide-dominated Monterey Bay and its access to international trade via sea lanes such as Alta California (the old route between Europe and Asia) and Peru's Pacific coast.
