Airforce gift history in Monterey, California began with the United States Air Force. The USAF was founded on December 15, 1947 in Roswell, New Mexico by General Curtis LeMay. With its inception came a need for a means to give back to the community that had supported it during World War II. The USAF base at Monterey County Airport would be one of the first locations where the service would offer gifts to local residents and businesses. From here, theAAF would distribute items such as clothing, food, medicine and other supplies to servicemen and women stationed worldwide. This continued until 1956 when the USAF relinquished control of Monterey County Airport to local authorities. The facility served as both an airfield used by Air Force units as well as civilian users until it closed on December 31st, 1984 following a massive fire which destroyed most of the runway structure. Monterey Peninsula was the site of the first permanent European settlement in California. The area now includes Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Marin counties. In 1821, Don Miguel de Alvarado discovered and named the Peninsula after Monterey Bay in southern Mexico. The first Europeans to live on the peninsula were Mexican Adobe builders who built their homes fromadobe blocks cut from the surrounding coastal cliffs.
