In 1851–52 a series of earthquakes hit the area causing significant damage and displacing many people; however, most of these events did not change Monterey's status as an up-and-coming coastal fishing center or agriculture settlement. In 1932–1933 President Franklin D Roosevelt visited Monterey for his State Fair observations program; he also toured some of the local businesses that were being created around that time such as Fisherman's Wharf (later renamed Pier 39). Also during this time period large numbers of Japanese immigrants moved into Monterey from Japan following World War II and started various industries such as seafood processing and shipbuilding at Pier 39 and elsewhere in town while others began farming around what is now Downtown Montevideo which developed primarily as a residential district later known as North Beach during this time period despite having been little affected by waves of immigration over the years since it sat outside both Portsmoor Naval Air Station - where naval aviation activity occurred until 1974 -and then south along SR 101 until it reached its current alignment near Airport Boulevard when development resumed following World War II largely because it was closer to major commercial attractions like Disneyland than older areas further inland like Martinez or Salinas Valley where those attractions had been located before they were replaced by airport developments Nearby land usage changed significantly too with much newer housing developments popping up around Airport Boulevard while old warehouses continued to be used for other purposes such as agricultural storage until they closed down completely in recent decades Most recently there has been a renewed focus on redevelopment of Downtown Montevideo including plans for mixed use/residential/commercial buildings with an eye towards becoming more pedestrian friendly
