Monterey is a city on the Monterey Peninsula in California, United States. It was founded by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1775 as an English exploration party's landing spot. The first coffee beans were roasted in 1835 at the old Pismo Hotel and Cafe. In 1848, entrepreneur George Hearst founded the Hearst Corporation, which soon started importing coffee to Monterey from all over the world. By 1901, Hearst had built a large plantation near the city for growing coffee trees and processing beans into cups of joe. The current owner of Hearst Coffee has been running it since 1903. Since its inception as a port town on San Francisco Bay, Monterey has been home to many different types of businesses and people who have influenced its economy and culture – including artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers and engineers. Some of Monterey's most famous residents include artist Leonardo da Vinci (whose House of Mirth is now part of galleries in downtown Monterey), author Adolfo Bioy Casares, explorer Frank Wray Durant and business magnate Jack Warner (founder of Warner Bros.).

Monterey, California is a small city located in the Central Coast region of Southern California. The population was 7,895 at the 2010 census. The Monterey Peninsula includes much of the city proper as well as threeareas: East Beach, West Beach and Midway Point. Monterey's history dates back to 1777 when Captain Juan Rodríguez de Monterey founded Santa Cruz Bay Colony on present-day Topaz Island in Monterey Strait. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and created its own country, which included much of what is now California. After Mexican independence was announced, Alta Californiana (the highlands), including Monterey Peninsula became part of Mexican territory called Baja California. In 1846, during the American Civil War, General José Joaquín Córdoba occupied Monterey Peninsula and proclaimed himself Governor of Baja California while military forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna defended Los Angeles against Confederate attack. On October 21st of that year, Mexican general Francisco Polanco surrendered at El Pardo after a three-month campaign; Commodore John Drexel recommended that San Francisco be chosen as the capital for Mexico's new southern state but this plan was vetoed by President Pierce because he considered Los Angeles more important. The first post office opened in 1861 in East Beach with six mail sacks per day and two days per week being served by boat from San Francisco Bay Area; it closed in 1865 due to low demand from settlers living near San Francisco only accessible via sea or air transport. A new Post Office was established on December 5th 1860 (now Midway Point) coinciding with the opening of Hearst Castle which functioned as a luxurious hotel until it burned down on July 14th 1861 amidst protests by residents who saw it as an invitation toinvaders. In 1882 efforts were made to open up some land east of town along la Balboa Creek so that vineyards could be developed but these efforts failed due to opposition from property owners who saw themselves as having been shortchanged by developers who had paid them royalties upfront for developing their land instead of holding onto it until they received cash payments upon sale plus interest Furthermore many people believed that growing wine grapes would enable winemaking technology becoming more efficient overall leading eventuallyto increased grape production yielding improved quality wines

The city was founded in 1846 by Captain James Cook on what would become Rancho Santa Cruz de las Pulgas. In 1849, Mexico ceded control of Rancho Santa Cruz de las Pulgas to Great Britain as part of a trade agreement following their victory at Buenaventura. From 1850 until Mexican independence in 1901, Monterey was part of Alta California under Mexican rule. After its independence from Mexico, Monterey became an American city with a British-American population. The first Europeans to visit what is now Monterey were Spanish missionaries who traveled there in 1795–96 when they were looking for new land for missions along the Pacific coast. Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo visited Monterey Bay on November 2, 1542 while exploring San Francisco Bay Area before setting off on his circumnavigation of North America that led him to present day San Diego County and back again in search of new land for Christianity. On July 24, 1544 Sebastián Vizcaíno discovered San Francisco Bay Area when he sailed into it from Ventura Harbor on his flagship Nuestra Señora del Rosario AFPM ( vessel captained by Don Pedro Menéndez). On August 26 aboard Hidalgo de Maldonado he observed two mountains which he called "the Peaks" because they looked like peaks seen from some distance away during his journey across North America that had lasted over three months since leaving Vera Cruz on June 9th He named them Mount Carmel and Mission Peak after Blessed Virgin Mary's mother María Elena de los Dolores (www) .
