Monterey, California is a city located in San Mateo County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 709. The name Monterey comes from the Ohlone word "mah-tuh-rey" meaning “haunted place” or “spiritual center.” The first Europeans to visit Monterey were Pedro de Valdivia and Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 22nd, 1542. In 1846, Commodore Perry led an American fleet through Monterey Bay and into Central America in search of gold and pearls. After exploring for only two weeks at anchor off the coast of Monterey Peninsula, Perry decided that he could not find any valuable resources inside Mexico City so instead he turned back home without finding any treasure. In 1849 Captain James Cook discovered land that would later become part of Monterey County when he sailed along the southern coast of Santa Cruz Mountains and made landfall on Isla Navidad which is now known as Pebble Beach. On January 17th 1850 following a 10 day journey from Manila (now Manila Bay) they named their new discovery after General José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla who had been commanding Mexican forces during the Mexican-American War (1848-50). At this time there were just six people living in Coyote Valley: three Chinese immigrants and three women who worked on local farms with their families. In 1860 Don Vicente Gomez built his rancho at present day Main Street and Summit Avenue in what is now Downtown Monterey Village because it was then all that was available for purchase within five miles of where he lived. By 1870 Overland Mail Line Company Stage Coach Depot had been built at Third Street near what is now North Park Boulevard between State Route 1A (present day US 101) and State Route 2B (present day SR 1A/SR 2B). Monterey was a small settlement on the Monterey Peninsula in California, located about midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It was founded by adobe builders in 1846 as part of the Rancho Santa Clara Mexican land grant to José Altamira. The first post office at Monterey was established in 1851. The name "Monterey" is derived from Juan Bautista de Anza's 1769 exploration of what is now Ventura County. The first Europeans to visit Monterey were Franciscan friars, who built Mission San Miguel de Agua Caliente (now part of Pasadena) in the early 18th century. A mission town developed around it, with homes, an chapel, and a well-fortified complex called Presidio del Conquistador (Presidio of Conquest). These were abandoned during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), when most people fled to United States territory. In 1847, José Altamira granted some land north of present-day Monterey to American entrepreneur Augustus Dearborn for $2,000 (). Dearborn started building several sawmills there and named his new town after himself—Monterey—but this name did not come into use until after he sold it to John Leland in 1850. Leland renamed it Afterland after his friend General Antonio La Paz's army campaign against Spanish Californias in 1849. In 1863–64, Ulysses S. Grant visited this area while on his way through California; he called it "the Promised Land". In 1870s/1910s rock music became popular here due to Visitacion Palomar Observatory being built nearby; local bands like The Mavericks played at the observatory from 1969 until 1974
