Monterey, California is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California on the central coast of the U.S. state of California. The population was 7,826 at the 2010 census and it is included in the Monterey Peninsula region. It is 8 miles south of Salinas and 9 miles north of Santa Cruz. The name "Monterey" comes from Mission San Francisco de Asís, which was founded by Franciscans in 1776 on the site now known as Monterey Bay. In 1821, when Mexico acquired Alta California from Spain, part of Monterey became part of what would become Salinas County and remained so until 1959 when it became part of CA (California). Today much of modern-day Monterey takes its name from General George Armstrong Custer who died at Fort Humboldt during the American Civil War. In 1849, Don José Altamira built a mission here to serve as a stronghold against Mexican traders seeking to enter Californias new gold fields. This settlement grew steadily until 1851 when Commodore John Davenport's US Navy destroyed all but one building in what is now downtown Monterey after they attempted to raid Spanish shipping off southern California for saltpeter and other minerals coveted by America's navies during its Gold Rush era. A second missionISCripción de Nuestra Señora del Carmen y Nuestro Salvador—was established just east of present day Cathedral Avenue in 1852 following an attack on another Spanish mission nearpresent day Castro Street by Indians allied with Mexican forces led by Captain Manuel Armijo Reyes Barragan acording to contemporary reports; this mission also failed catastrophically due to a fire that burned for days after indigenous attackers looted and burned most everything within including 60 horses worth $20 each! Monterey, California is a town located on the Peninsula of Northern California. The community's name comes from Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded in 1769 by Argyle and Teodora de Mendoza as part of the Rancho Monterey grant given to Juan Bautista Alvarado. In 1846, following Mexican-American War victory over Mexico, President James K. Polk designated Monterey as the new capital of California. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1850. The City of Monterey experienced rapid growth during its early years due to its position at the mouth of Monterey Bay and its access to water resources that made it a prime location for commerce and farming. Commerce grew rapidly due to trade with Asia and Europe; agriculture also flourished because of easy access to good soil and climate. By 1870, however, industries had begun to decline in favor of other locales such as Salinas or Santa Cruz. However, despite this setback, Monterey continued to grow slowly but steadily until World War II when it exploded in population due to wartime demand for shipbuilding materials and military hardware fueling American entry into World War II. As post-war suburbanization began throughout California beginning in the late 1950s, development momentum quickly shifted away from downtown Monterey towards newer areas such as False Creek within walking distance of each other (the first wave being built between 1958 and 1966). Today most people living in downtown Monterey consider themselves old-time residents who still use many aspects of their town's culture including music festivals (including both classical concerts and rock shows), arts events (particularly film screenings), horseback riding outings around False Creek Park or exploring hiking trails leading out along Hearst Castle Road or up through nearby Mount Hermon National Monument which features beautiful views across Yerba Buena Island before descending back down along Castro Valley Rd., ending at Pismo Beach where long walks are often taken near tidepools providing stunning views into abyssal depths beyond any seen ashore on Earth!
