The Monterey National Guard has been a part of the United States military since 1846. The unit was originally organized as an artillery regiment and was redesignated as a national guard battalion in 1907. The battalion served in World War I and World War II before becoming a full brigade in 1958. In 1971, the brigade was re-designated as the Monterey County National Guard and currently serves within the California Department of Defense. The brigade is one of only a few national guard brigades within California that is not headquartered at Sacramento or San Diego. The Monterey County National Guard's history can be traced back to 1846 when Captain John Cushing organized the first militia company in Los Angeles County. After six months of drill, Cushing disbanded his company and ordered its members to arms for war against Mexico. America declared war on Mexico on April 6, 1848 and by October 12th, Californians had formed companies from their militias to join the military effort. In 1907, Governor Alonzo Evans activated the Monterey County Militia Regiment under command of Major General Jens Jacobsen who had just assumed command of US troops stationed at Vallejo Naval Base after Commodore James Stockton's disastrous attempt to lead an invasion of Panama City Bay. When President Theodore Roosevelt approved Operation Crossroads on November 3rd, 1911, Jacobsen organized 2 regiments (Monterey Battalion #1 & 2) from local volunteers into federal service with headquarters at Coyote HillBattery on Elkhorn Ranch near Paso Robles until activation February 10th 1912 at Camp Roberts north of Paso Robles (*). A total strength for both battalions was 1256 men including 11 officers/ warrant officers*. One company from each battalion served initially with Hawaii during World War I but soon returned home; personnel remained active through 1919*(*). On July 16th 1918 President Wilson signed Executive Order 9346 which designated all volunteer organizations into permanent units subject to Federal regulation without any recall privileges – this order marked the beginning of what would become known as mobilizationism*. Assemblements were now required quarterly “for general muster” using lists drawn up by Brigadier General John Sibley*, (*) although there was no actual regulations governing how these meetings were conducted*(*). On September 15th 1920 Major General Edwin Vail activated Company H (Paso Robles) from inactive reservists earlier called upon for service in Honduras following a insurrection there which started on August 24th that year(*). A total strength for Company H was 358 men plus 7 officers/Warrant Officers*. On January 8th 1922 Congress passed Public Law 89-622 which consolidated all volunteer organizations into federal agencies such as Army Corps Of Engineers*, [*]. With this change came new regulations governing how these agencies functioned and how many soldiers they could mobilize*(*). By 1923 there were over 4000 uniformed individuals providing protection for citizens throughout California*(*). From 1915 until 1931 all militiamen serving within state boundaries were required to serve two years out OFFSET OF THE WARRANT DUTY unless exempted by law or contract; those discharged prior to expiration received credit for one year towards their next term($*) . Troops guarding county ports & routes automatically became eligible for recall upon expiration or transfer (or must request leave if transferred outside county limits) . Enrollment peaked at 5200 men June 1916 (& dual enlistment ceased effective date)*(**)). During this time also saw rise in crime rates due largely to unregulated paramilitary forces wearing uniforms without proper training or authority *.* *. Although program ended officially with endof hostilities with Japan September 1945 most enlisted Marines went directly onto duty thereafter because no other agency requested them *.(***))

By 1870, most of what is now downtown Monterey had been built up and there were only a few scattered buildings remaining such as Mission San Francisco de Alcalá (1871), Mission Santa Cruz (1872), Presidio Real de la Bahía del Ferrocarril (1877), and Pueblo Viejo (1880). In 1892–93 Edison Manufacturing Company installed an electric light system at Point Lobos lighthouse which made Monterey one of southern California's first towns to have electric lights. On July 17th 1893 Mayor John Hancey announced that electric streetcars would start running through town on Commerce Street within two weeks; this event marked the beginning of modern day Monterey Municipal Administration services including public schools and City Hall which are still in use today. Electric streetcars ran until 1927 when they were replaced by buses due to escalating costs associated with maintaining them compared to gasoline-powered streetcars. During World War II much activity took place along both coasts due to wartime demand for materials shipped inland via water transport routes ashore from Northern California ports like Stockton and Sacramento

Monterey, California is a small city located in Monterey County, California. The population was estimated at just over 10,000 as of the 2010 Census. The first people to live in what is now Monterey County were Native Americans who hunted and gathered resources near present-day Pebble Beach. In 1821, Captain John D. Sloat reached Monterey from Yorba Linda and claimed land on which he built a ferry landing called Golden Gate Landing. In 1825, Don José Mariana Cabrillo explored and claimed part of what is now Monterey Peninsula as Rancho San Francisco de Asis before sailing back to Spain with his ill-fated vessel "San Francisco". In 1846, American Commodore Matthew Perry sailed up the Pacific coast of North America and discovered California when his ship " afloat" observed a rock formation at Lompoc that could not have been explained by natural causes – it was later discovered to be an artificial island created by Spanish settlers! Afterward Mexican citizens petitioned Mexico's Congress to annex California because they believed that all along the coast there were such “Islands” waiting to be named after their great nation's heros! On February 21st 1850, Ulysses S Grant became the 1st President of The United States when he was elected over James Buchanan! At this time there were only 8 towns in California: Sacramento (then known as Alameda), Honolulu (Oahu), Santa Clara (Santa Cruz), Fillmore (Napa), Los Angeles (Ontario), Yuma (Rancho Mirage) and Grantsville (Newhall). Ulysses S. Grant had always wanted to see Mount Whitney but postponed his trip until after he took office because he knew that if he went too soon then Californians would start moaning about how much easier things would be once General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House having failed miserably in invading our state 5 years earlier! So on April 2nd1865 Ulysses S Grant made history when instead of going up Mount Whitney like everyone else expected him too do - he ordered General Custer led forces north instead!!!
