Monterey is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Luis Obispo County and it is part of the Monterey–San Benito–Borden Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Monterey were Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and his party on November 8, 1497. The name "Monterey" likely comes from Mission Santa Cruz de Monterey founded in 1777 by Father Anselmo Sanchez and named for Mount Carmel in Galilee. In 1821, José Joaquín de Urrea y Pacheco laid out a plan for the town on land he purchased from Rancho Nuevo Viejo Mexicans who had been farming there since 1776. The town's first post office was established on March 17, 1827. In 1849, George Custer during his final campaign for US Senate noted that "the site [of Monterey] has long been famous as an agricultural center where choice fruit trees grow abundantly." He called it "a pleasant spot nestled among rolling hills" and predicted that with new irrigation systems and better transportation system development would follow: A locomotive depot was built just east of present-day downtown in 1850 by Colonel Cyrus McCormick; passenger service started daily between Los Angeles and Monterey Bay in 1865 (and continued until 1951). On July 30, 1870 Commodore James Kapp sailed up the coast from Long Beach after destroying all but one of 10 ships under his command while patrolling off dog days off Point Reyes National Seashore; he called at Monterey Bay before rounding Cape Horn near Islay before anchoring at Narragansett Bay on October 9th to load supplies for Manila Bay duty. Monterey, California is a city located in San Francisco County, California. The population of Monterey as of the 2010 census was 66,641. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States and has a rich history dating back to 1775. In 1846, Mexican nationals who had been living in Monterey petitioned for annexation into Mexico City; this request was denied by the U.S. government on the grounds that such an annexation would have brought about too much trouble for both countries. In 1849, American pioneers arrived in what is now Monterey and began developing its land. By 1850, they had founded two small towns: Salinas and Sloat. On July 15, 1860, during the Mexican-American War (1846-48), General Antonio López de Santa Anna forced the U.S.- Mexican force at Mission Dolores to withdraw from Monterey after nine weeks of hard fighting with little success; this event became known as "The Battle of Monterey." After taking control of San Francisco from Mexico on September 9th, 1853, Commodore John Doolittle led a squadron under Admiral David Dixon Porter against Fort Point at nearby Alcatraz Island; this action marked the beginning of American military occupation of California waters east of Sacramento Bay. After intermittent skirmishes with local Native Americans over grazing rights and trade opportunities (the so-called "Bonus Expedition"), Commodore Porter's forces landed at Monterey on November 1st with orders to establish a military post there to monitor shipping between Northern California and points southward along Spanish America's PRI controlled territory (New Spain). A garrison was also established at Pilar de la Cruz on December 8th following word that friendly natives were gathered around Arecibo Village seeking protection from US troops positioned offshore while their winter stock ranches were stocked up for next year's crop season; although outnumbered and outgunned by American forces ashore and afloat (some 6500 soldiers versus 25 vessels manned by 40 officers/men), an estimated 7000 Mexicans joined US Marines garrisoning Pilar de la Cruz during operations leading up to Christmas Eve 1860.) Although claiming no victory over Commodore Porter's forces when reported back home - many believe that he actually lost due to his poor leadership - Santa Anna's decision may have helped spur development efforts underway at Don Pedro mission near modern day Petaluma which eventually resulted in Buena Vista Barracks complex being erected there in 1862.* This initial attempt at establishing permanent U.S.-Mexican settlement failed when hostilities resumed in 1861 following USS Maine’s bombardment off Dragon Point††† resulting in three fatalities among American warships‡§§*‡§ *. However sporadic border skirmishes continued until 1865*, culminating with another major engagement off Canoga Mesa resulting in five killed*(**)‡§*. This particular engagement helped stimulate Mission San Miguel further north towards Carlsbad Caverns where construction finally began on what would become known as Presidio Real de Monterey on October 12th 1866.* (**) As events transpired new issues arose surrounding Manifest Destiny – or ideas promoted by President Abraham Lincoln stating that Trail Of Tears – motivated partaking by white settlers of newly acquired land within Mexican borders should not be discouraged but rather embraced since it represented “an opportunity unparalleled anywhere else upon our continent…. [and] one which could not be ignored….. [It] cannot be emphasized enough how important it was for us to secure possession…of these lands…. [We must] work together harmoniously without any animosity or jealousy*** [*]. And so it came about that today we stand here facing east across [the Golden Gate Bridge], watching communities grow around us while heritage takes root deep within our bones*** [*].
