Monterey is located in California, on the north coast of San Francisco Bay. It is a small town with a population of about 35,000 people. The name Monterey comes from Mishequi meaning "place where the ocean meets the sky." The name was given to it by Spanish settlers because they saw an orange field on one of their trips overland from Mexico City to Monterey Peninsula. The first European settlers arrived in 1769 and named the area Molinas after Juan Bautista Molina, captain of the viceroyalty's ship La Paz. In 1824, another group of Spanish explorers discovered and named Monterey Peninsula after Captain Blanco Vázquez de Coronado. After Mexican independence was declared in 1821, United States citizens began arriving in increasing numbers and began developing property around Monterey Peninsula. On December 12, 1846, while exploring Santa Cruz County for potential land grants, Ulysses S. Grant awarded land at present-day Pebble Beach to John Cranch for his Rancho Vallejo winegrowing operation. In 1848–49 Commodore Perry landed at Monterey Bay and on February 10th he ordered all U.S.-owned vessels within five miles of Point Reyes Station must turn back or be destroyed by order of Admiral David Dixon Porter (later Commodore Joseph Farragut). The USS Constitution anchored off Point Reyes Station during Perry's visit and several American officers were ashore including Commodore George Dewey who toured the peninsula before departing for New York City that same day aboard USS Constitution flagship Topeka with orders to bomb Japanese ships thought operating near Point Reyes Station! A plaque marking this event can still be seen near Topeka wharf today. In 1850s private individuals started growing grapes in addition to olive oil and other crops but there were no refrigeration facilities available so these activities stopped around 1870s when railroads came along which made shipping much easier delivering products all over North America east-west

The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Monterey Peninsula were Spanish missionaries in 1769. They named it Isla de la Cruz after the Hispanic crossroads of La Cruz and Santa Cruz Roads. Today, Isla de la Cruz lies just east of downtown Monterey and west of Point Conception National Monument; both are administered by the U.S. National Park Service as part of the East Coast Region of California national park system. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made near present-day Salinas to José Joaquin Murciélago and Vicente Guerrero for service in driving American settlers out of Mexico City during their war for independence from Spain. On July 26, 1825, President James Kiefer issued an executive order that created Rancho San Francisco del Norte (known today as Rancho Coyote). In 1827 Chilean Navy lieutenant Andrés Manuel de Alvarado granted two leagues (about 0 km²) adjacent to Point Reyes Station on Mount Shasta to Juan Bautista Aguirre for a whaling station known as "Esquivel" – one mile inland from bluffs overlooking San Francisco Bay and open ocean beyond; this became the nucleus for what would become Silicon Valley including much of Rabobank and Century America -- with Mission District filling in around 1910 when mostowntown buildings were renovated following earthquake damage done in 1906 This long history reflects its location on topography: close to but not at sea level where waves crash against cliffs or shorelines; near water but far from mountains (); with maritime trade continuing until about 1860

It recovered rapidly following those wars but has since been hit hard by economic recession and displacement from other parts of California due to growth in neighboring cities. Monterey is currently experiencing significant revitalization as a result of its long history as a vibrant fishing port and commercial center; however, much more remains undone than completed while there are many concerns about future development patterns and effects on local environment
