Monterey, California is a small town in San Francisco County, California. With an estimated population of only 9,000 people as of 2010,[1] Monterey was one of the most sparsely populated areas in the Bay Area. The first European to visit Monterey was Gaspar de Portolà in 1769. The area now known as Monterey was part of Rancho Santa Cruz before it became part of the United States in 1848. Monterey's history began with its landing by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on July 2, 1542 when he and his men were sailing from Mexico City to Cádiz. On July 11, 1846 Lieutenant John Broughton discovered land that would later become Monterey Peninsula and named it after General José Joaquín Moraga y Elías for his victory over Mexican forces at Puebla on February 28, 1847. The first post office was established at Monterey on December 12, 1850 by J.D. Payne and Wm Halsell.[2] By 1860 there were only around 100 inhabitants living in what is now downtown Monterey[3]. In 1862 Captain Francis Drake visited the area along with Rear Admiral George Crocker; they agreed that "the rich bayous filled with fisheries extending into many leagues off" could not be reached without a fortification and decided to establish one near present day Scripps Institution of Oceanography (now UCSD). They named their new fort "Fortaleza" after Don José Antonio de Fortún y Valdés who had been Prime Minister of Mexico under Emperor Charles II during the Napoleonic Wars. This fort served as an artillery batteries too strong for local Native Americans to take down until 1865 when American troops arrived and destroyed it while they burned all nearby villages including Mission San Miguel de Asís which also housed mission Indians. In 1870 Fortunato Acosta founded Año Nuevo School which became world-renowned.[4] One year later Levi Strauss & Co., owners of a store on Market Street in downtown San Francisco opened their first store here at 5th and Mission Streets called The Strauss House After WWII growth brought more housing developments such as Veterans Affairs Medical Center (now UCSD) across the street followed by major commercial establishments like Japandroids started popping up throughout the 1970s becoming well known for their distinctive headlamps/flashlights since no other businesses dared open up then viz: Casbah Pizza across from Haagen Dazs
