A group of twenty-six men and women landed on land that had been donated by José Antonio Rancho San Gabriel, located near present-day La Crescenta. The town was named for José Manuel de la Garza, viceroy of New Spain at the time. soon after its establishment, Moorpark became a thriving agricultural community with two churches and a school. The town's proximity to Los Angeles led to growth in trade and commerce; as well as housing development. In 1912, the first post office opened in Moorpark; it was known then as "New Venice". The town's population peaked at over 500 people in the 1920s before decreasing gradually until it reached its current level around 1980. Moorpark has experienced various changes throughout its history; including gentrification which has lead to increased crime rates and displacement of longtime residents. Moorpark, California is a small town in the Inland Empire region of Southern California. Moorpark was first settled in 1887 by Irish Americans and their families who had emigrated from County Tipperary. The community was named for General John F. Cody, who served as commander of the United States Army at Fort Sill during the Mexican-American War. The population reached 100 in 1912 and grew to 2,500 by 1920. By 1940, only 1,000 people lived there; however, it continued to grow until its annexation by Pasadena in 1972. Today the population is below 1000 and much of its cultural heritage has been lost to development orinderwards. The history of Moorpark begins with its incorporation as a city on March 14, 1902. At first it consisted of just a few houses on Hacienda Boulevard between Maple Avenue and Donner Street; however, within two years it had grown to include over 60 buildings on 6 blocks (now bounded by Colorado Boulevard/Alameda Street/Hwy 101/Moffet Road). The early residents were primarily Irish American Protestants who came from County Tipperary because they could not find work in the rapidly growing Los Angeles area after the end of World War I. They built their homes around churches and schools which they shared with other Irish American families nearby. A massive fire destroyed most of downtown Moorpark on November 15, 1916 when an engine defect caused a large explosion near Alameda Street Bridge resulting in one death and dozens injured; this event is still considered one of the worst disasters ever perpetrated against civilians in Southern California
Moorpark, California was founded on October 6, 1870 by the brothers John and Walter Moorpark. The town became a post office in 1872. They built a sawmill and located it on the San Fernando River. The mill produced lumber until it was replaced by a flour mill in 1893.
