Moorpark, California is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. Moorpark is the second-largest city in the county and the fifth-largest city inSilicon Valley. The population was 87,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The history of Moorpark can be traced back to 1853 when John Sutter started out as an American settler on Rancho Los Feliz. In 1856 he and his brother Mormon George purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present day Moorpark Boulevard from José Castro y Ulloa for $10 per acre ($2,600 today). The site became known as Sutter's Fort after John Sutter's father-in-law, who had founded Sacramento. In 1865 Territorial Governor Pio Pico created Corral de la Ascencia ("Coward's Gate"), which served as a cattle ranch until 1886 when it was leased to J.P. Morgan & Co for development into a town center with anvil mine and smelter operations (the first outside of California). At about this time developer Hiram Bingham laid out streets that would become familiar to residents: E Street led south from downtown; 4th Street ran parallel to Donner Avenue; 5th Avenue bisected downtown; and Main Street crossed Donner Avenue near what is now Torrance High School before terminating at Interstate 80 northwest of town limits. Bingham convinced local business interests to open up their doors during a period where businesses were closed due to prohibition laws prohibiting alcohol sales within territorial boundaries - one such business being Pabst Brewery which opened on 2nd Street in 1888 just north of Bingham's Hotel and continued operation until Prohibition repealed in 1933. During prohibition some stores were left unoccupied while others converted into speakeasies or other illicit drinking dens but by 1933 most businesses had reopened including many breweries which helped contribute significantly to the growth of downtown during this time period. One notable exception during prohibition was Salinas Brewing Company which operated out of its original building on 3rd Street until 1931 before moving its production indoors due to law enforcement efforts against speakeasy operators operating without permits throughout Silicon Valley exceeding any expectations even thoughSalinas produced more beer than all but four other brewery operators combined according as reported by author Harry Wohlhausen in "Brewers Row: A History Of The Silicon Valley Business District" published by University Microfilms International Inc., ISBN 0-8247-1536-2 . After repeal there was significant retail turnover with many small businesses closing down along with heavy job loss because Prohibition removed numerous well paying manufacturing jobs across America leaving rural Americans struggling economically although there were pockets of prosperity such as El Sobrante County, California whereBanana Boat Brewery managed to stay open despite being raided multiple times by police over pricing / advertising issues however overall Alcoholics Anonymous meetings took hold throughout much of Northern California despite Demonstraitions forbidding it . “Moorpark didn't develop rapidly like Palo Alto or Menlo Park because people only drank coffee then they went off coffee," said Mayor Tom Bateson." “Moorpark really did take off after World War II when we got our reputation for good quality Scotch whisky." “

Moorpark is located on the east bank of the Arroyo Seco River and is bordered by eastern San Bernardino County to the north, Riverside County to the south, and Joshua Tree National Park to the west. It has been a major agricultural center since its founding in 1887 and was once one of California's most important citrus villages. Moorpark is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Moorpark was incorporated on December 12, 1879. The population was 15,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Moorpark were Spanish missionaries in 1769. rancho de la Misión Vieja (Old Mission Ranch) was located east of present-day Moorpark and included land that still comprises much of the city today. In 1824 Mexican grants were made to 8 farmers named García, Herrera and Pérez who established several ranches nearpresent-day Moorpark including Rancho del Norte which extended into portions of Agoura Hills and North Olmsted Heights today. In 1849 Antonio Bárcenas purchased part of Rancho de la Misión Vieja from Don José Nieto for $1,000 and began to build a house there called "El Junco" or The Jackdaw. A year later he sold the house to Pedro Perez who built another home there called "Viejo Palo Alto". In 1853 Santiago Moreno founded a missionschool in what is now downtown Moorpark (later known as Moreno School). Part of this school's campus still remains within the boundaries of modern day Moorpark; it includes a small park/garden with an old mission building on one side and buildings used by various businesses on the other side of Pioneer Parkway between 2nd Street and 3rd Street West. In 1862 Juan Ortiz started farming near present-day town center along Old Santa Fe Trail west of town limits when he deed three acres (0.81 km²) west of Centerline Road for $2 per acre ($42 per hectare). This land became known as Ortiz Farms after him and his family bought it from John Dominguez who had acquired it from rancher Manuel Ortiz in 1863 for $35 per acre ($1 million/$9 million today). In 1865 Isidro Ramos startedfarming south of present day Boulevard north of Old Highway 95 about two miles east-northeastof Centerville Road northwest corner onto what are now parts OFour Mountain Rd., current Interstate 10 exit 9A & US 101 exit 7A off I-10 just outside Jurupa Valley southeast border oF Pershing Rd., then northeast across Pershing Rd./ Coachella Valley owned& operated by El Paso Water Service Company until 1984 when they merged wit h Southern California Edison company while also using some portions oF Pershing Rd.. Today most oF Ortega Farms land is zoned residential according to ICP maps but some open space remains rural grazing country surrounded by privately held forested properties east & southeast otForsyth Ave SW visible from I-10
