The United States Army was founded in 1775, and the first military unit to be organized in California was the 1st Regiment of Dragoons, which was raised at Fort Tejon on December 10, 1847. The first American soldier to be killed in action in California was Major George Armstrong Custer on July 5, 1856. In 1907, the 1st Infantry Battalion of the California National Guard became part of the Regular Army and began using the name "Moorpark" battalion. Moorpark's military history began with U.S. cavalryman who ceded Rancho San Fernando de Arroyo (now part of Moorpark) to Mexico on February 3, 1848 as part of Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; Mexican soldiers were stationed there until 1850 when they were withdrawn and replaced by Californians under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. On October 15th 1861-the day after a US arms shipment arrived at Pico Alto from Málaga -Mexicanos attacked rancho Arroyo Sansón y Valdés near present-day Moorpark with artillery and small arms fire starting an uncontrolled stampede that left 31 people dead and many more injured or captured including several members of Captain John Sutter's Gold Rush Company (later known as Sutter's Mill). In 1872 Colonel James Wickersham donated land for what is now Camp Pendleton Marine Barracks and barracks for 2 battalions of Marines along with a large hospital complex; these barracks remain today as Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base housing units located adjacent to various other parts of Naval Base Point Loma also used by Marines. From 1915 through 1917 during World War I, Camp Roberts Training Center served as naval aviation center providing training for pilots from all over North America before being transferred to NAS Miramar where it operated until 1945; Naval Air Station Miramar is now known as Mojave Air Force Range lying immediately southeast off Interstate 8 between Carson City and Palm Springs. On September 16th 1951 President Dwight Eisenhower ordered all US troops out of Korea effective November 25th; this order led to numerous gifts being given back home such as horse saddles, rifles, pistols etc.; many items found their way into local schools or museums over time such as a bronze rifle barrel from Stockton Arsenal munitions plant that once belonged to General Pershing having been salvaged from another facility in Modesto

Moorpark, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. Moorpark covers an area of 32.4 square miles (86.3 km2). The population was 7,906 at the 2010 census and is estimated to grow to 11,000 by 2020. It has been called "the Venice of the East Coast" because of its concentration of art galleries, wineyards and other boutiques dating back to the 1800s. The first Europeans to visit what is now Moorpark were Spanish exploration parties led by Gaspar de Portolà in 1769-70. The town was platted in 1849 as part of Rancho San Rafael Mexican land grant given to José Joaquin Crespo and Mariano Castro; it was renamed Moorpark on July 14, 1859 after General James Blythe's invasion force destroyed Mission San Fernando Rey de la Catrina east of present-day Moorpark. The railroads arrived in 1881 and changed how people lived and worked hereabouts. In 1912 the town incorporated as a city under the new Municipal Code which allowed for more than one thousand citizens without having to purchase land or vote once they qualified for incorporation--a unheard-of provision at that time. In 1941 Moorpark became one of only two cities on both coasts allocated military training camps during World War II (the other being Sausalito). After the war ended, many businesses moved out but others such as Chevrolet purchased property within heartland park for use as housing developments later known as "New Town". A large fire ripped through New Town on Christmas Eve 1951 destroying most of it including homes, businesses and churches; all residents were evacuated before firefighters could arrive due to fear of another major blaze like that which had consumed much older communities just north of town while they slept ─ this event is generally considered the worst fire ever fought in Orange County history. Today there are few survivors from then or any subsequent fires around here with most buildings/neighbors either torn down or abandoned following their occupation by various businesses over time ─ excepting a small amount remaining behind near unpaved roads leading up into what used to be residential neighborhoods now known simply as "OldTown."
