In 1927, John D. Rockefeller and his nephew Vernon McGee bought the Mazie's property and began to roast coffee there. The business grew rapidly and soon became one of Moorpark's most popular spots for coffee lovers. The Mazie family operated Mazie's until 1976 when they sold it to Harry & David Coffee Company. The company continued to operate as Harry & David Coffee until 2003 when it was acquired by Peet's Coffee Corporation. After being purchased by Peet’s Corporation, the restaurant closed in 2004 and reopened as a Starbucks location in 2005 under new management.

Moorpark is located in the Mojave Desert and has an elevation of 4,600 feet (1,500 m). Moorpark was founded on April 20, 1912 by officials from Bakersfield and Wasco Counties as a small town named after Tilden Park in Los Angeles. It became a city on December 1, 1959. The discovery of oil in Kern County during the 1930s led to rapid growth for Moorpark. In 1937-38 with new wells being discovered every two weeks or so and production reaching 2 million barrels per day (100 thousand metric tons/year), control of the local oil industry passed from Bakersfield to Moorpark. The first refinery was built in 1941 and continued to produce large quantities until it closed in 1984 due to environmental degradation caused by oil production techniques then known as hydraulic fracturing and gas injection; this also increased air pollution levels within the city limits which have been consistent with increases seen throughout southern California ever since. Moorpark is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. Moorpark was founded on November 17, 1887 by Mormon pioneers from Utah. Moorpark became an incorporated town on December 1, 1912. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County and home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and part of the University of Redlands campus. The first people to live in what is now Moorpark were four Mormon pioneers who established a ranch in 1887. They named their new village after John C. Fremont's old salt lick near Sacramento – "Moor Park." In 1912, when San Bernardino County was created, Moorpark became its county seat and remained so until 1966 when it was moved to Riverside County because of population growth within that county. In 1969, the community voted to annex parts of Elsinore and Fontana because they felt their populations warranted it as a separate municipality with its own government and school district; these annexations were made effective October 1, 1970. On July 9th 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor causing over 100 civilian deaths including many innocent children playing near Ford Dam which then filled with water as a result of damage done by the bombing raids six days earlier that day; this event has been called "the worst air raid disaster in American history."
