Jardine & Macdonald explored and mapped much of present-day California before arriving at this site which they called "Moor Park." At that time there were no permanent residents or businesses located within present day MoorPark limits; it was only accessible by horseback or on foot through rugged country terrain covered with oak trees and other hardwood forests! Over time, many families each increased their holdings within what is now known as the "Old Town" area around First Street/Canyon Road between Polk Boulevard (now Geary Blvd.) on the east side and 2nd Street/Mission Road on the west side - becoming so powerful that they singlehandedly held back development near their homes until after World War II when new zoning laws changed everything! In 1886, John Denton purchased 160 acres north-west of downtown from Duncan Baird for $1 per acre - thus beginning what would become one of Northern California's most significant landowning families!
