In 1970, Moraga City Council passed an ordinance decreeing that all municipals must have their own armory if they are to maintain their independence from county government arms procurement authority within state law (California Penal Code Section 527). This ordinance led to the construction of Armadillo Armory located on North First Street between Second and Third Streets in downtown Moraga. Since its opening in 1971, Armadillo has been home to both the City Attorney’s office and various other municipal departments as well as serving as a resource center for gun enthusiasts throughout Northern California (Armadillo website). Moraga is a town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay and near the city of Oakland. Moraga has been inhabited by Chumash people for more than two centuries and their descendants still live there today. The first European to visit Moraga were Spanish missionaries in 1769. A mission was built here in 1821-22 by Father José de Alvarado as part of an effort to convert the local Native Americans to Christianity. In 1835, Moraga became part of Rancho grande Mexican land grant given to José María Castro and his brother Vicente by Mexico City Governor Manuel Gamboa y Valdés. The area now encompassing Moraga was part of Rancho Jurupa por una raza (Jurupa Valley for a race) from 1836 to 1858 when most of this valley became part of Contra Costa County. In 1859, following the American Civil War, most of what is now Contra Costa County was acquired by the United States government as part of the western survey for Rancho San Pablo Mexican land grant given to various military officers and civilians who had fought in that conflict including General John Blythe during its early stages In 1865, following its purchase from US Government, much or all of present day Contra Costa County including Moraga were organized as Bernal Heights Township under California state law due largely to efforts spearheaded by Drs. William Cullen Bryant and Edwin Arnold with support from Mayor George Eastman (son-in-law of Andrew Carnegie). At that time it was felt that Berkeley would become too large and Ringgold too populous so instead Bernal Heights would provide a nucleus around which other towns could form while remaining within commuting distance to downtown Berkeley however this did not happen until after World War II when many factories moved into Bernal Heights making it one of America's largest annexed communities . Thereafter vast amounts development took place with residential subdivisions being developed along Interstate 80 between Pittsburg/Bay Point in eastbound lanes adjacent to Interstate 680 northbound with continuing development developing south along I-880 into Hayward until finally there has been almost total redevelopment since 2000 only minor changes taking place such as new street names
