Moraga, California was founded on February 22, 1848 by American soldiers who served in the Mexican-American War. The town was named after General José Antonio Moraga and his family. The community was located on the south side of the Sacramento River, about 12 miles from Sacramento. It grew rapidly thanks to its location and good water resources. In 1852, Moraga became the first town in California to have a telephone line and soon began to become a center for trade and commerce. By 1863, Moraga had a population of over 1,000 people.During the 1860s and 1870s, many Americans moved to reside in Moraga because of its attractive climate and prime agriculture land. Many businesses were built here including a post office (1867), grocery store (1870), bakery (1871), meatpacking house (1874), hotel (1875) and three churches (1877). In 1878, Moraga voters elected their first mayor, James Hickey. In 1886 they elected their second mayor--Alfred Waddell--who led the town through an exciting period of growth that included construction of several new buildings such as theMoraga High School which opened in 1889. By 1907 there were more than 2,000 residents living in Moraga with a total payroll of $8 million dollars! During World War I many local businesses closed but when hostilities ended in 1918 most locals repatriated back home within months of peace proclamation ending warring factions across America!
