In 1970, it became an independent city again after it lost its status as an agricultural center due to changes in legislation affecting agriculture. Moraga, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was founded by the Moragas in 1847 and became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1959. The population of Moraga was 8,895 at the 2010 census. Moraga is located southeast of Fresno and northwest of Sacramento. The Moragas were Spanish missionaries who arrived in Alta California in 1817. They named their community after General Manuel Antonio de Mora y Arellano, one of the commanders who led an unsuccessful attempt to retake Los Angeles from Mexican forces during the Mexican–American War. The first post office was established at Moraga on November 6, 1848. TheMoragas also built a sawmill and gristmill around this time which continued operation until 1862. In 1861, following the American Civil War, most Californians chose to remain within the United States rather than become Confederate soldiers. As a result of this choice, many small towns across the state were abandoned as well; however, Moraga remained unaffected because it had been annexed by Fresno County as part of that county's process of becoming racially segregated under new California state laws enacted following Reconstruction. Moraga, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 28,912 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Pablo Bay. Moraga was incorporated as a city on October 10, 1937. The Moraga and Martinez Railway defined the town's limits in 1849 when it was part of Rancho Dolores Mexican land grant to José María Castro. The first post office in Moraga opened in 1856. The name may be derived from Spanish "morada" meaning place of rest or "morgue" meaning death certificate or burial place. In 1869, the Moraga Post Office moved to its present location at 4th Street and Broadway where it remained until 1971 when it reopened at the current site. The first store in town was built on Main Street in 1909 by Jules Wellesley with assistance from his brother-in-law Arthur Morse and others who pooled their money to finance its construction. A second store soon followed and by 1912 there were six stores operating within the community which had a total population of about 100 people. In 1916 an agricultural fair was held and local farmers brought in show animals for display along with vegetables, fruit trees, feed stocks and other items for sale to visitors who drove up from Diablo Valley to view them The village declined after World War II because of lost jobs due to automation; however, new housing developments have returned it to life over the past few years due to growing rents near Interstate Highway 680
