Moraga was named after General José Joaquín de Mora y Valdivia who led the Mexican Expedition against the United States during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Moraga on November 17, 1859 by Captain John Sutter with the name of "Hidalgo". The name changed to "Moraga" on December 12th, 1859 after General José Joaquín de Mora y Valdivia visited the town. On October 6th 1860 it became known as "Chico", after Manuel Antonio Chico Peralta who had fought in the American Revolution and died at Battle of Buena Vista Hill. On October 15th 1861 it changed again to "Mora" after Governor José Avila Moralesmora donated land for a school and general store at present day Moraga Creek Road and Main Street. In 1880, when most of Kern County was divided into two counties ( Placer County and San Bernardino County), Moraga received part of San Bernardino County. It remained a rural community until World War II when more residents moved into nearby cities such as Bakersfield or Stockton because of plentiful farmland thereabouts. Today, many residents still maintain their close ties to their farming roots while living within minutes’ distance of shopping centers like Bakersfield or Stockton which offer access to much needed goods unavailable closer away like cheese or eggs that cannot be grown hereabouts without irrigation water from reservoirs located upstream along the Kern River system.
