Coffee has been brewed in Moraga, California for over a hundred years. The first coffee beans were grown on the property of George H. Hill in 1857. In 1865, Carlos Mesa purchased the land and began to grow coffee. A decade later, he founded the first commercial roaster in Moraga. By 1881, Mesa had eight small plantations producing two million pounds of coffee a year. He also founded the Moraga Coffee Club, which promoted sustainable farming practices and supported local businesses. In 1916, Hill sold his share in the company to José Orozco and others led by Orozco formed National Coffee Corporation (NCC). NCC continued to operate as a private enterprise until it was bought by J.P. Morgan in 1928. From 1928-1946, NCC produced more than twenty billion cups of ground coffee with a net value of $2 billion dollars! Today, NCC is part of Peet's Corporation and still produces high quality coffee here in Moraga - making us one of America's top-selling companies!

Moraga is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Moraga is located on the shore of the San Pablo Bay and it is bordered by Hayward to the north, Berkeley to the east, Oakland to the south and Belmont to the west. The first Europeans who set foot in what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish soldiers who invaded Northern California in 1769. They named this region Yerba Buena ( means " fruitful bay"), after an oak tree that was found near their landing site on December 7 of that year. The name stuck and as early as 1829, Moraga had a post office with its own ZIP code. The first permanent settler in what is now Contra Costa County was George Morrison who arrived in 1847 from Illinois and named his land Rancho de las Pulgas (meaning "pigeon ranch"). He also built a church, school and tannery hereabouts. In 1849, he sold his interest in Rancho de las Pulgas to Antonio Maria Sánchez which led to the settlement of Moraga all but two years later on October 20th of that year by three brothers - José María Sánchez, Francisco Xavier Sánchez and Manuel Michelin-Lejeune. It took another two years before any buildings or crops could be grown there because no water could be obtained from nearby hillsides for irrigation purposes due to flowing waters coming down from Mount Diablo into San Pablo Bay! In 1861 Juan Bautista Alvarado purchased some land northeast of Moraga from Morrison for $5 per acre ($40 per square mile). ancestryWeb reports that Alvarado named his new community Refugio del Norte ( meaning " Refuge of the North") after his native Mexico City where he had been born just one year earlier! There has been much speculation about whereRefugio del Norte may have actually originated...but ultimately no proof exists! "Alvarado's new community quickly became known as Moraga after General José Joaquín Murrieta y Pavón capitulated at Mexican City on November 15th during Californian independence movement." At least one source claims that General Murrieta may have been visiting Mexico City when he received news of independence proceedings taking place there; however more recent research suggests this information may not be true. Regardless Alvarado decided upon this name given its similarity to other Spanish words associated with Santa Cruz Mountains including Refugio ( refugió = refuge) and Guadalupe (Guadalupe = high mountain). The original adobe buildings still stand today around town center nearly 150 years later--a reminder of how quickly this small corner of Contra Costa County came into being! Moraga is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 34,848 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Contra Costa College and Moraga Valley High School. The first permanent settler in Moraga was John Day in 1853. He named his community after Mount Diablo, which he saw from his farmhouse near the mouth of Coyote Creek. settlement increased rapidly with the opening of the Santa Clara River Railroad in 1865 and consequent increase in trade and industry around the town. The city began to grow quickly even as it continued to be served by Coyote Creek Road, which ran parallel to present day Highway 24 between Moraga and Walnut Creek. In 1886, when all of Contra Costa County was formed, Moraga became one of its original municipal entities under the name " unified municipality ". In 1936, it again changed hands when its predecessor merged with another local entity - this time that of Pittsburg - making it an unincorporated community once again. However, until 1974 it remained part of Contra Costa County as an unincorporated place within its borders only though housing tax revenues were collected there until then by Pittsburg Township (now Orinda). On July 14th 2006 Moraga voters passed Measure B-2 which legalized Marijuana dispensaries within city boundaries without going through township or county approval process as had been proposed by opponents who claimed that selling marijuana would attract criminals onto their streets who would then victimize innocent citizens with violence or other crimes while also generating revenue for their own criminal enterprises
