Morrissey recommended it for that name because "the place had been called 'Easton' since before there ever was an Easton.'" After annexation byRoseville in 1916, however, Moraga again reverted to its original name when it became part of that city's new district. In recent years, Moraga has experienced strong growth due to numerous businesses and residential properties being built along its bike path and riverfront areas. It became a census-designated place in 1959 and is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 31,898 at the 2010 census. The history of Moraga begins with José Antonio Moraga and his family who arrived on horseback from Santiago de Chile in 1849 to find new land to farm. They were among the first Europeans to set foot on what is now the United States of America. In 1850, they acquired 640 acres (249 km²) of land east of present day Sacramento County and began construction on their home which they named La Casa Blanca (The White House). This initial home served as a headquarters for many years for the ranching industry in this area. In 1872, José Antonio Moraga married Mariana Pacheco and together they started a dairy business that would become one of the most successful in California. For over 100 years, Pacheco's Dairy has been providing quality milk products to local residents and businesses throughout Northern California. In 1960, following passage of the Federal Aid Highway Act, La Casa Blanca became an official U.S.$0 million Rural Development program project within USDA's Agricultural Service Division - today known as HUD - which helped support rural communities across America through economic development programming
Moraga was founded in 1853 by José Joaquín Moraga and his wife Mercedes. The first post office opened in Moraga on November 15, 1854. In 1865, the Moragas donated land to the town of Moraga for a school and cemetery. The townspeople built their first store in 1868. In 1905, the Moragas donated land to create a new city block within the boundaries of present-day San Francisco. San Francisco incorporation happened on December 17, 1905. The City of San Francisco merged with the County of Contra Costa on January 1, 1906 to become one unitary governmental entity known as California (UCLA). On September 16, 1906, San Francisco's Chinatown was destroyed by a fire that started in an old printing shop next door. More than 150 buildings were lost in what is now considered one of America's worst fires. After years of planning and construction work led by Mayor Dianne Feinstein and Supervisor George Moscone, Chinatown reopened on December 12th, 2008 as part of downtown's $500 million redevelopment project which saw over 100 businesses brought back into business along with new housing units
