Moraga, California is a small town located on the Pacific Ocean in Southern California. The population was 11,493 at the 2010 census. It is bordered by Salinas to the north and east, Monterey County to the south and west, and Watsonville to the northwest. The name Moraga comes from Spanish meaning "place of many trees." The name may also be derived from Ohlone word mora meaning "hillock," or " bluff" and agua meaning water. In 1846 General José Arguello founded Moraga Rancho de las Pulgas (now part of Salinas) on what is now Main Street in what was then part of Bolsa de Ojo (now part of Monterey). Moraga's original store was built on Second Street in 1847. In 1861 Charles Fenton opened a school at Moraga for his children in what is now Fenton Elementary School. A post office called Moraga was established in 1865, and remained in operation until 1909. In 1892 when it became apparent that land adjacent to present-day downtown would be needed for development as well as for military barracks during World War II, San Francisco Mayor Eugene Debs allocated $25,000 towards acquiring land near Sloat Boulevard between First and Second Streets and donated it to the City of San Francisco under the terms that no building could be erected without city approval. The first store on this lot was built with government money by developer Edwin Diller who named it Diller's Drug Store after his father-in-law--Paul Dudley Diller who had been mayor of New York City from 1929 to 1933. (Dillers Drug Store still stands today.)
