Moraga has a significant agricultural history dating back to the 1800s, with crops such as grapes and apples being grown. The first post office in Moraga was established on December 3, 1887. The original inhabitants of what is now Moraga were Ayeris who lived near present-day Yreka and Bakersfield. They were nomadic people who migrated from central Mexico overland during the late Pleistocene epoch to reach California through what is today Nevada and Oregon. Upon arriving in Alta California they built Cahoma Village on present-day State Route 126 about 8 miles east of today’s intersection of U.S Highway 395 and State Route 508 (now SR 128). After some time they moved downriver to form the nucleus of the city that we know today. Their descendants continue to live in Moraga today along with other Ayeri clans that settled along San Francisco Bay Area counties including Marin County, Contra Costa County, Sonoma County and Alameda County during this period During World War II local farmers produced large quantities of munitions needed for Pacific Theater fighting The area around present day Moraga became part of Rancho Santa Clara de Atascosa Mexican land grant given to Franciscan missionaries Father José Altamirano y Vargas on November 15th 1797 by Captain James Fenton pursuant to patent #205 dated November 2nd 1802 . Father Altamirano y Vargas named his new village after Saint Martha or Martha’s Vineyard which he had seen while traveling across North America with his companions Father José Aguilar de Anza y Costilla and Don Antonio Lopez de Mendoza In 1859 Josefina Peralta married Manuel Nieto (born 1840), an American citizen naturalized Mexican as well as founder/director/owner of Our Lady Of Guadalupe Mission Church & School located at 6090 McKinley Road north east of downtown Moraga now housing our Lady Of Guadalupe Parish Hall & Museum operated by Holy Cross Catholic Church & School District No . 134 within their parish boundaries
