Moraga is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Moraga is located on the eastern edge of Berkeley Hills and according to the United States Census Bureau, it has a total area of . The first Europeans to explore what would become Contra Costa County were Spanish Exploration Parties led by Juan Bautista de Anza in 1776 and Diego Rivera in 1847. Riverside had been founded as an agricultural town by John Sutter in 1837. The name "Moro" meaning Indian or Native American was given to this place by Missionaries who called it San Francisco de Moraga (Valley of the Morns). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. As of 2000, there were 1,711 people residing in the village. Of these people, 100% are White; 0% are Hispanic or Latino; 0% are Asian; and 0% are two or more races. Of particular note is that 2/3 (651) % of residents identify as Protestant while only 1/3 (226) identify with any other religious affiliation...Of concern also is that despite high rates of education attainment among its residents - over 90% have earned at least a high school diploma or equivalent - just over half (55%) live below poverty line thresholds...It should be noted that much like most villages across Contra Costa County- Moraga's population appears evenly balanced between male and female members- nearly everyone age 16 and older can claim employment related income from wages or salaries alone."

It was created on September 17, 1917 by the National Defense Act as part of the New Deal to provide Federal support for State militias during World War I. Moraga is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. Moraga is located on the shore of San Pablo Bay and includes most of the eastern end of Moraga Point. It is bordered to the north by Hercules and Tecate counties, to the east by Berkeley and Oakland counties, and to the south by Richmond and Alameda counties. The first Europeans to reach Moraga were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1795. In 1821, Colonel James Fenton founded Rancho Potrero de las Pulgas (now part of Richmond) in what is now Moraga Point. A mission was built there in 1825, but it burned down in 1826 due to an attack by natives. In 1827 his son John Fenton sold Rancho Potrero de las Pulgas to José Jarvis y Peña for $20,000 cash plus 5% interest on each crop he grew there for 10 years until it was patented in 1840 under Mexican rule as Rancho San Pablo de la Pulgas por José Jarvis y Peña et al.. In 1848, American settlers arrived with the California Gold Rush and began building towns along the coast such as Bodega Bay and Portola Valley around Sausalito Cove. On October 15 of that year, they named their town after General José Joaquín Murillo's victory over Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Camus Creek near modern-day Petaluma (now part of Vallejo). The name "Moraga" means "place where cows are milked." In 1862 Captain George Hearn established a cattle ranch here which became known as Hearn's Ranch - later renamed Hearn & Son Ltd., before finally becoming part of RKO Radio Corporation when that company merged with ABC TV Corporation in 1979. The town had become an agricultural center during this time with production of cornmeal flour (from Mission Dolores), hayseed beef (from nearby Healdsburg), appleseed oil (from Pleasanton), watermelons (from Russian River Valley), chrysanthemums (from Tilden Grove), grapes (ripe from several hundred acres near Crockett Vineyards) and other crops being shipped out into Marin County for market sale or export across Highway 1B/C/D/E etc.. In 1847, Moraga was recognized as a town by the California Legislature. The first post office in Moraga opened in 1851. In 1863, Moraga became part of the newly created Fresno County. The population of Moraga grew rapidly during the early 20th century, reaching over 100,000 by 1910. Growth slowed during World War II and afterward, but reached its peak again around 1970. Today, Moraga has a population of about 30 thousand.
