Moraga is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of San Pablo Bay and is part of the Richmond–Northern Contra Costa Combined Statistical Area. The area that now Moraga was first settled by Ohlone people in the early 17th century. In 1853, Rancho Moraga was granted to José Castro and David Tebaldi by Governor Manuel Nieto. The grant included land east of what is now downtown Moraga and north of Interstate 80. The town began to form in the late 1800s when many Chinese immigrants who had married US citizens moved into this area from southern China. In 1909, Charles Wolkentin bought 627 acres (242 hectares) northeast of downtown Moraga for $10 000 from Antonio Muros y Pacheco, also known as Napoleón Muros or Napoleón Valdés. After years of negotiation and construction work, Wolkentin's dream became a reality: he built a small but beautiful white clapboard house on his property which has still stood today – one of only two such buildings remaining in the entire town center after more than 200 years! Wolkentin opened up his new home as a hotel called The White House in 1911 because there were no other hotels available near where he lived or worked. The hotel served as an important local stopover for travelers coming down Highway 1 from Marin County during prohibition era California Prohibition. A post office called Moraga was established in 1912; it served until 1959 when it became part of Redding Municipal Airport District #1 with that name being discontinued due to changing postal boundaries within Contra Costa County at that time). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land except for . Moraga, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1853 by the Moraga people and has been inhabited by various Native American tribes since before that time. The Moraga people were among the last groups to convert to Christianity in the late 1800s. In 1865, they founded what is now Moraga College. The Moraga community flourished until the early 1900s when a series of droughts led to a decline in population and industry. However, since 2000, there has been an increase in population and businesses due to development around Moraga College and its surrounding rural area. The history of Moraga begins with the arrival of Spanish settlers in 1821. They built a small cabin on Rancho San Francisco de los Andes east of present-day Moraga. The first European resident at Rancho San Francisco de los Andes was José Antonio Aguilar, who arrived on November 10, 1821. Upon his arrival, he named his land Rancho San Francisco de los Andes after King Philip II of Spain's colony of Santa Fe. Aguilar sold this land to Santiago Alvarado for $1 million on October 1, 1822. The first post office at Rancho San Francisco de los Andes opened in 1827; it was called "Puebla". A second post office opened at Doniphan Creek on December 1, 1830; it was called "Aguilares". On October 15th, 1830 Gilbert Place also opened as a post office within rancho San Francisco de los Andes (now part of downtown). In 1854–55 Pedro Noriega y Costilla erected a adobe house located at 5452 Coyote Mesa Road about four miles northeast of present-day Moraga for use as a public schoolroom and offices for him and his wife Mercedes Carrillo Noriega y Costilla alias Arellano both citizens from Taos County where they had moved from Carlsbad prior to their marriage sometime beforeJanuary 8th1854 which took place at El Rincon Chapel also located near Coyote Mesa Road which made them Mexican nationals according to law then & still does b/c their father Manuel Noriega who lived there 3 generations ago purchased that land did btw parents Palomas Pacheco Villa & Mariano Lopez Borden Separate ownership document dated January 22nd 1860 shows separate ownership pkgrp name “Los Angeles Mission” during Mexican War era thru #7 2 families active here so regardless ifTerra or Mexicali they should have been listed here :Mexican War Era thru #7 2 families active here so regardless ifTerra or Mexicali they should have been listed here
