The first USAF military airbase in the Moreno Valley area was established at Victorville Municipal Airport in December 1942. The purpose of the Victorville Airfield was to provide a staging and training ground forAAF Training Command's Boeing P-38 Lightning aircraft, which were being brought up to strength after their debut in World War II. The base remained in use until it was closed down on 1 July 1945. In 1951, the United States Air Force activated an auxiliary unit at Victorville known as the 7th Arnold Flying Training Wing (7 ATW). This wing was responsible for providing Advanced flying training activities for USAF fighter pilots and bombers. In 1957, the wing re-opened at Victorville Municipal Airport under new name of 9 ATW which became operational as a Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) with F-86 Sabres from neighboring San Bernardino County Airport. It is from this wing that most of today's USAF fighter pilots come from when they are activated as part of III Fighter Command or XVIII Bomber Command. On 15 October 1958, General Curtis LeMay announced plans to open an additional airbase at Moffett Field in California solely for aerial refueling operations over Korea! This would be followed by another airbase opening soon afterwards – Luke Air Force Base – both located adjacent to each other about thirty miles east of San Diego Bay. These bases would become key elements of Project Arrowhead which aimed to strategic UHF interception and warning against nuclear attack across millions of square miles within North America…. After years of planning and construction, these two important AFB's opened on 14 November 1959 - becoming known collectively as "the Denver Mile Highs".
