Moreno Valley is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 84,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Moreno Valley is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,291 at the 2010 census. Moreno Valley was founded by Spanish nationals in 1849 as part of Rancho San Luis Rey del Cielo. The name derived from the word "Moreno," meaning "humble" or "plain." The town was initially named for José Moreno, one of the first Mexican citizens to reside in the area. In 1851, Moreno Valley became part of the new Chabot Division of Los Angeles County and was incorporated as a city on December 17, 1951. Moreno Valley's history dates back to its establishment as a small ranching community with just 10 residents in 1849. The ranchers who settled here were primarily Basque and Italian immigrants who managed large ranches that ran along the Blanco River. Over time, some other Anglo settlers arrived including United States Army officers and their families who established military posts around Mission San Antonio de los Padres and beyond. Around 1890-1891, an agricultural settlement called Amador began to develop near present day Moreno Valley after Mexican Americans working on nearby ranches began to purchase land in what is now Amador County. By 1906, Amador had grown sufficiently that it became its own municipality which would eventually merge into larger Moreno Valley during World War II when much of the surrounding rural areas became available for military production due to wartime shortages of other goods such as food and lumber. Afterward, many shopkeepers moved out of town because there were no serious professional opportunities available for them within commuting distance from downtown Los Angeles; however, a few businesses continued to operate until about 1970s when technology made most jobs obsolete outside metropolitan areas).
