Morgan Hill is a small town in the upper California Valley, located about 20 miles east of San Francisco. It was originally named for General James Morgan, who died in 1827 while leading an attack against the Mexican village of San Jose de Atacama. The name was changed to honor General John C. Morgan, the first U.S. Postmaster General and one of America's most celebrated commanders during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The original Missionary District of Monterey had its start here in 1776 by Father Junípero Serra and his companion Baltazar de la Garza. Of great significance were also the establishment of Alcalde or Mayoralty posts at Guadalupe (1781), Santa Clara (1793), and Monterey Heights (1803). In 1849, when California became a state, Morgan Hill became part of what is now Alameda County. The post office was established at Morgan Hill on July 3rd, 1850; it remained in operation until it been discontinued on December 15th, 1918. In 1853 two brothers - Wm.
