Morgan Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,567 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula. The first European to sight and explore this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542 during his "Plea of Peace"Visit of Alta California. On November 17, 1846 The U.S. Navy ship USS Constitution under Commodore Matthew Perry anchored off the shore of Morgan Hill while Perry demanded land rights from Mexico in what would be known as the Mexican–American War. In 1859 local physician Obed Lincoln opened his practice in what is now downtown Morgan Hill after moving to town from Rancho San Lorenzo two years earlier. In 1865, pioneer John Sutter founded Sutter's Fort at Point Reyes National Seashore and built an adobe home for himself and wife Lucy there which became one of California's most important historical landmarks. In 1876 local attorney Jens Jensen purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) north of town from William Randolph Hearst for $10 per acre ($140 per hectare). He named it Morgan Hill after then-Governor George Richards Morgan who had helped secure passage of the Bland Act that granted voting rights to American citizens en route through Mexican territory prior to admission into the United States as a state in 1850 ().
