Morgan Hill is a census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 5,903 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name Morgan Hill is derived from Spanish "morgen hill" meaning "morning rise." The first Europeans to see and describe this area were the Lapham brothers in 1824 when they explored the area for their rancho Santa Clara de las Madres (later Rancho Central). They named their land Monterey because of its resemblance to Monterey Peninsula in California. The post office at Morgan Hill was established on December 8, 1848, by Capt. John Brougham and Mrs. Elizabeth Atherton. In 1860 it became part of Contra Costa County and remained so until 1955 when it became part of San Francisco. The first school in Morgan Hill was built on what is now Highland Avenue in 1870 by Wm H Davidson with 6 students; later that year there were three schools: one for boys and two girls. In 1908 a water tower was erected on Palomar Mountain just east of town to provide drinking water for an unincorporated community called Coloma Heights which had been founded by early settlers near Mission Peak about a mile northeast of town on June 16, 1907; Coloma Heights eventually merged into Morgan Hill proper but continued to use the name Coloma Heights until 1941 when it changed again to suggest that alluding thereto should not be confused with nearby Coloma Valley which itself lies within Contra Costa County's jurisdiction only formally since 1922 under the terms of various land grants dating back before 1850AD - thus effectively annexing much older but geographically separate communities like East Palo Alto and Menlo Park within single county boundaries!

Morgan Hill is a small town in Contra Costa County, California. It was founded by John Morgan and his wife Sarah in 1868. The name is likely derived from the nearby Mount Diablo lava field. The population of Morgan Hill was 2,947 at the 2010 census. The Mt Diablo lava field attracted many prospectors to the area during the Gold Rush of 1849-1852, and led to the establishment of several mines and towns around Mount Diablo. By 1870, when John Morgan died, he had built a large farmstead at what is now the intersection of US 101 and SR 99A. With help from his son-in-law James Irvine, John Morgan's nephew, who also ran a store in nearby Lafayette (now known as Pleasanton), John Morgan laid out an unincorporated community called "Morgan Hill" on May 1, 1871. The town site included about 200 residences and businesses including an inn and post office. The first business in Morgan Hill was wagon wheelwright Isaac Sessler's Emporium which opened on May 15, 1871. A second store opened two weeks later by Jno Harkness who operated an adobe bakery/canned goods store next door to Sessler's Emporium; this building still stands today as part of the original plaza complex that surrounded downtown Morgenthau Street before it became residential neighborhoods adjacent to US 101 east of downtown Morgenthau Street between First Street (later renamed Campbell Avenue) and Second Street (later renamed Pinehurst Avenue).
