Morgan Hill, California is a city in Santa Clara County, California. The population was 24,723 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Clara County and home to Stanford University. The name "Morgan Hill" (or "Mornin' John") comes from an early settler, John Morgan, who named his property after himself. In 1851, James Folsom founded what became Palo Alto and land within the current boundaries of Morgan Hill was annexed by Palo Alto in 1857. The first post office in Morgan Hill was established on January 15, 1852; it was renamed San Francisco on December 12th of that year. On October 7th of 1863, San Francisco Becomes a City through Act No. 542 & Sections 1-4 of Amendment No. 8! This makes Morgan Hill Home to over one million people as our City expand out to all corners of this great State!

Morgan Hill is also home to many high-technology companies including Hewlett-Packard, Oracle, Intel and Samsung. The name "Morgan Hill" comes from two adjacent hills in the area: Mount Diablo on the east side and Mount Olympus on the west side. In 1849, John Sutter discovered gold near Mount Diablo and named it after his friend General James Halleck Morgan who led Californios during their war for independence from Mexico. The first European to set foot in Morgan Hill was Commodore George Vancouver who landed there on July 14th 1792 with his ship HMS Beagle. He had been sent by London as a envoy to negotiate possession of California for Great Britain. When he arrived in Monterey Bay he sighted land that he claimed as Queen’s Domain – now known as Silicon Valley – but never really touched because no gold existed hereabouts. After years of exploration by various parties over several months culminating with Captain Richard Goodwin’s disastrous Mission Santa Clara on December 15th 1818 (the first recorded contact between Europeans and Native Americans), Commodore George Vancouver finally found payable gold nuggets at Meadowbrae Creek about 10 miles due west of present day Morgan Hill on August 29th 1824 while exploring Russian River Valley under license from Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena* (*See footnote). The first permanent settler in Morgan Hill was John Woolridge in 1853. He founded a prosperous mercantile business which prospered until 1875 when prohibition made alcoholic beverages illegal throughout most of California. In response to this economic downturn, Woolridge closed his business and moved his family to nearby Hercules where he established another successful mercantile business. After working for some time as an engineer for Southern Pacific Railroad, Woolridge decided to settle permanently in Morgan Hill in 1878 with his wife Catharine and two childrenJohn and MargaretHe began developing what would become one of Contra Costa County's most prestigious agricultural valleys: fertile oak woodlands that supported many crops such as almonds, wine grapes, cottonseed oils and hay; rolling hills covered with sheepskin blankets during winter months; and winding streets lined with fashionable homes built between 1878-1920." Woolridge named his new community after himself – "Morgan Hill" – because he had seen extensive growth along the Eastern Shore of San Francisco Bay only a short distance away from where he now lived. By 1890 Morgan Hill had about 1,500 residents; it had become known for its fine schools (which still exist), its Georgian-style architecture (many homes still stand today), its picturesque rural setting - complete with almond orchards dating back to before Prohibition - and its rich history including contributions from early American settlers like John Woolridgeto both local businesses (such as a woolen mill)and national events like Woodrow Wilson's inauguration in 1913." But it wasn't all good news for Morgan Hill: WWI disrupted agricultural production while concurrently creating massive amounts of waste that needed disposal; following World War II ads touting how much easier things were now that “the atomic age” had arrived led many families to move out into newer neighborhoods such as Richmond or Walnut Creek while also decreasingly returning home during off-peak hours.; finally notching their first major hit when they became one of only four communities statewide awarded “A” status by state government planners under Proposition 13 in 1973."
