The City of Morgan Hill was formed on February 20, 1850 when John C. Morgan donated land to the City as part of his gift to San Francisco. The original site for the city was on the east side of Telegraph Road between Highways 1 and 8 near what is now Chinatown Lower Market Street and Park Avenue North. The area today known as Morgan Hill was first alluvial soil that had been deposited during many years of significant flooding that affected this portion of San Francisco bay due to periodic storm events called “the wet season” or winter rains. In 1851, John C.(John Crandall)Morgan donated land at 5100 geographic miles (8000 km2) south from Daly City onserves as an eastern border for what would become Palo Alto County; he also donated 500 acres (200 hectares) including present day Mount Diablo Boulevard northward to make way for what would become downtown Palo Alto

Morgan Hill is a small town in California, United States. It is located in San Mateo County, on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley. The population was 17,733 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Morgan Hill were Spanish explorers who came ashore on November 3, 1777, while exploring the Bay Area from San Francisco to Monterey. Captain James Cook and his crew had sailed past this area just two weeks earlier on September 26th when they saw Mount Diablo rising south of Sausalito (the peak now known as Santa Cruz Mountains). Upon its discovery by these pioneering maritime explorers, Morgan Hill was named for General George Morgan who had been with Cook's expedition. In 1847, during the Gold Rush period of California history, miners discovered rich gold and silver veins near what is now downtown Morgan Hill. The town quickly grew as a result of this rush; by 1850 it had over 10 thousand residents and boasted several stores and two churches. By 1863 all but one of the businesses in downtown were destroyed by fire caused by vandals motivated by gold fever (a disease then still very rampant in California). During World War II many local military personnel lived in tents along Highway 101 north of town due to shortages of housing closer to bases around the state. One such individual was Lieutenant Colonel John Hultgren who resided at 5654 El Camino Real which became popularly known as "Hultgren's Ranch". Morgan Hill experienced rapid growth following World War II as baby boomers moved into homes vacated by soldiers or their families returning home from war-time service. In 1957 Raymond Burrioch moved into one of the first homes built in downtown after being kicked out of his parents' home near Stanford University where he had attended school before becoming an actor/director/producer/. Burrioch helped develop Downtown Morgan Hill into one of Northern California's most vibrant commercial areas - an important factor leading to its current status as a center for technology startups and high-tech companies throughout Silicon Valley. Today,Morgan Hill remains an agricultural community with some residential development taking place within its boundaries; although much effort is put forth towards maintaining rural character typical among Californians living outside coastal cities like Los Angeles or San Francisco. Located some 20 miles east off Interstate 80 nestled between Palo Alto and Menlo Park – smack dab in between Mountain View and Palo Alto – Morgan Hill has become well known for its quality educational institutions: including Rowan School District’s renowned college preparatory program which has produced more than 100 Rhodes Scholars since 1978;[1] also nearby is Silicon Valley’s only private Ivy League university—Columbia University—which offers undergraduate degrees starting at $50,000 per year[2]; together these institutions have made MorganHill one of Northern California’s most sought after commuter towns.[3]
