Morgan Hill is a small city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 9,259 at the 2010 census. It is located in the East Bay region of San Francisco Peninsula. The first permanent European settlement in Morgan Hill was made by Captain George Vancouver on July 14, 1777 during his exploratory trip between Point Reyes and Santa Rosa de la Mariana Islands. He named it after Lord Baltimore's estate on the River Thames in London, England. The earliest known inhabitants of Morgan Hill may have been Ohlone people who constructed a stone shelter near present-day intersections of Highway 680 and Diablo Road around AD 1000. A later group of Ohlone people inhabited what is now Morgan Hill from AD 1542 to 1600; they traded with moving groups of Native Americans including the Coast Miwok and Pomo peoples before eventually leaving for unknown reasons. British settlers arrived in 1846 as part of the Gold Rush and soon began developing land east of downtown Berkeley. One settler, James Wickersham, purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) around what is now the intersection of Fourth Street and Interstate 280 from Abelardo Cisneros for $3 an acre ($0.50 per hectare). In 1849 Wickersham erected a house on his property which became known as "Wickershams Hall". Upon Wickersham's death in 1852 his wife inherited his land and built a new house there also which became known as "Lady Wickersham House". One important event that occurred during this time period was when John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on Trinity Creek within sight of Lady Wickersham House; this event helped spur development along Third Street between University Avenue and Main Street which led to increased fish production at Sutter's Mill over time while also contributing to increased tradedistance between Fremont and San Francisco due to Increased shipping traffic through nearby Golden Gate Strait because thereof were found more valuable marine resources such as clamshells filled with lead ore than available inland resources such as gold mines or Proboscis whales oil reserves In 1865 American Civil War veteran General Winfield Scott Hancock purchased 200 acres (80 hectares) northeast of modern day downtown Morgan Hill from David Teague for $1 an acre ($0.10 per hectare). Morgan Hill was a small farming community in San Mateo County, California. It sprang up around the intersection of State Route 101 and Winchester Road in the early 1800s, and soon became a self-sufficient agricultural area. The first post office was established in 1805, and by 1836 Morgan Hill had a population of about seventy people. In 1865, the United States Post Office installed its own telegraph line to Morgan Hill, and by 1870 it boasted a population of one hundred people. A Methodist church was built in Morgan Hill in 1878. By 1900, however, agriculture had become an increasingly rare occupation in Morgan Hill; most residents were engaged in cattle raising or manufacturing products such as shoes and textiles. With the advent of World War II and the need for munitions production at nearby Willow Creek Ammunition Plant, Morgan Hill declined beginning in the late 1940s. However, it achieved renewed popularity following passage of Proposition 13 (the "bedroom tax") which repealed state sales taxes on housing within city limits during that decade. As a result of this new wave of development over the next few decades, much of what once constituted traditionalMorganHill society has now disappeared: most residents are now descended from immigrants who arrived during that time period or have moved away altogether.
