The townspeople named their new weapon "Majestic" after Frémont's horse, Majestic. In 1871, General George Armstrong Custer gave the town a military post office and rifle range. The first postmaster was Major James T. Doherty who served from 1872-1875. In 1888, General John J. Pershing donated a battery of artillery to Morgan Hill as part of his celebration for California's admission into the Union as a state. The battery was renamed "Pineapple" in honor of Pershing's donation and remains in use today by the USMC Garrison at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on San Diego County beachside since 1886. In 1897, another general, Ulysses S Grant offered $5,000 for land within Morgan Hill limits for an army base which would become Fort McDowell Monument Park (now Hollywood Forever Cemetery). The city council voted to accept the offer and donations were made from local businesses such as Packing House & Cookery Store owner Lorenzo Thomas to make land available for Fort McDowell Park including what is now Santa Monica Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. On January 17th 1898, General Order No 1 was published by Commandant of Marines Ephraim Witherspoon announcing that Fort McDowell would be open to civilians only beginning February 1st 1898 until relieved by Navy/Army troops pursuant to Executive Order No 1290 dated January 10th 1898 (the order stated that no civilians should be allowed within 5 miles radius of any military establishment). After four years of construction and $2 million worth of renovation work by many local citizens both beforehand and during the Ft McDowell park opening date there were over 20 thousand civilian visitors living on or near Fort McDowell between February 1st 1898- November 30th 1899 when it closed its doors due primarily to World War I economic conditions although small groups continued visiting throughout World War II until it reopened as barracks for Marines on October 16th 1949 (it reverted back to civilian status on July 29th 1951). There have been numerous proposals made over time for fortification or development around Ft McDowell but all have been refused because they would impact on present day civilian access without any permanent solution being found.. Morgan Hill is a small town located in San Mateo County, California. The population was 7,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Europeans to visit Morgan Hill were the Spanish in 1788, who named it Rancho Arroyo de las Pulgas (Ranch of Worms). The area nowincludes most of downtown Morgan Hill and parts of east and west side streets. In 1853, James Irvine built a mill on the banks of the Saratoga River opposite today's University Avenue. The mills produced flour, rice, beans, hay and other goods for shipment to other areas in California. In 1856 developer Richard Cranch purchased Irvine's mill site and began developing what would become Morgan Hill into a town with its own post office, school district and water system. The first homes were built on East Side Street between Newbury Street and First Street in 1859-60 by local contractor John Waddell Sr.. Waddell also constructed a one-story school house on Second Street which served as both home and school until 1902 when it was destroyed by fire; this building still stands across from City Hall on West First Street. Downtown Morgan Hill began to emerge as an early center of business activity during the late 19th century with brick buildings erected around Main Avenue (now University Avenue) including those that remain today such as First National Bank (1893), Jardine & Hastings LLP (1904), American Express Company Building (1907), Masonic Lodge #2 Building (1899), United States Post Office #1 (1890) and numerous others. During World War II many businesses closed their doors due to rationing but reopened after the war because new markets emerged within America like Europe where mass production became possible thanks to wartime shortages caused by Allied bombing raids over Europe which devastated much German industry resulting in widespread unemployment throughout Germany

Morgan Hill is named after General Sam Morgan who fought in the Mexican-American War and bringing peace to that region. The first post office called Morgan Hill was established in 1847. The town's name originated with General Sam Morgan, who fought in Mexico-American War on behalf of Californio forces against Mexican forces led by Joaquin Cámpora. The history of Morgan Hill goes back to 1847 when General Sam Morgan settled here with his family after fleeing from warring Mexican armies. He started a mission station called "Majestic" on the west side of Coyote Creek which served as a stop on his journey northward during the early days of California settlement. In 1853, an act was passed by Congress designating San Mateo County as part of Alameda County for the growing agricultural area around Berkeley and Richmond Counties to the east and south. In response to this new situation, Governor John Burnett appointed George Hearn to head up county government within two weeks of taking office on January 1, 1854. Hearn quickly assigned Representative Augustus Kelley (D-Oakland) as chairman of county commissioners and began work on organizing local government structures including that for townships within San Mateo County - each township electing three officials: one sheriff, one assessor/collector and one justice of peace - allocating land among them based upon assessed value alone without any development rights or title thereto until such time asVillage Improvement Districts were created through legislation approved by voters in 1958). This single change had a significant impact on how our city functioned becoming known collectively as Silicon Valley!
