Morgan Hill, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 68,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is the largest city within that area by both land area and population. Morgan Hill was founded in 1849 by John Sutter as an agricultural community on the ruins of his previous rancho near present-day San Rafael. The first store in Morgan Hill opened in 1850. The City of Morgan Hill was incorporated on November 3, 1865. The original name for the city may have been Spanish for "hillsocks". In 1872, local entrepreneur George Hearn donated 350 acres (156 ha) east of town to become what would become known as Hearst Park; he had previously donated land grant to Stanford University. In 1886, when Governor Blaine offered $5 million for a new national capital, Mayor James Wickersham recommended that Morgan Hill be included in the offer because it had "the most beautiful site" within commuting distance from Sacramento and its numerous vineyards and wineries. In 1898 during World War I, General John J Pershing visited Morgan Hill and gave speech at Mission College where he met then-Mayor Wickersham who described him favorably as someone with military experience who could help resolve problems which arose from military occupation such as traffic congestion around Vallejo Naval Air Station on Highway 101 near Temescal Ridge Road). That same year saw construction of Navy Shipyard No 2 on Point Reyes Peninsula across Coyote Valley from downtown which eventually produced many naval officers including Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter who later served as Commandant of Marine Corps Base Quantico during World War II before becoming United States Ambassador to China.. A number of other notable residents including author Edward Steichen (1902-2010), Hollywood movie star Paulette Goddard (1921-2008), astronaut Neil Armstrong (1955-2015) Frank Zappa (1927-1987) and former president Jimmy Carter were born or raised here including musician Ray Charles (b 1944). This diverse mix has helped make Morgan Hill one of Southern California's most vibrant cities full of culture and opportunity.

Morgan Hill is a small town in California, located on the eastern edge of San Francisco. The population was 12,815 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in California and home to many Japanese-Americans who had fought in World War II. The first European settlement in Morgan Hill was byChinese immigrants from Hong Kong who named their community "Fung Wah" (meaning "New Home"). In 1847, American soldiers burned down the Fung Wah building and founded what would become San Francisco. A few years later, American traders arrived with an idea to build a trading post onthe hillock called Fort Mason which they named after General George Mason, Commander of Ulysses S Grant's forces at battles such as Bull Run and Cold Harbor. The name "Morgan Hill" came about because early settler James Morgan built his house on the hillock near where it stands today. In 1853, two brothers - John Wetherill and Edward Everett - bought 160 acres (64 hectares) east of present-day Morgan Hill for $2 per acre ($14 million adjusted 2006 dollars). They laid out a road and farmstead that became known as Wetherillowne Valley. Wetherillowne Valley soon became an agricultural center with orchards, vineyards, chicken coops, flour mills and other businesses dotting the landscape. One ofWetherills daughters married wealthy Englishman Augustus Howe; their son Glenway purchased land adjoining Wetherills so he could have access to all the products produced there without having to go too far away for marketable goods. Glenways descendants still own much ofthat property south of Interstate 280 well into the 21st century. After years of development work by both men and women including influential local woman Julia Lathrop Emmons (1834–1911), construction began on what would become Stanford University in 1881 following a gift from banker Samuel Jaffe. Despite some opposition from locals who saw it as another commercial enterprise coming at them too fast, Stanford professor John McCarthy donated land adjacent to Palo Alto for physical education purposes which then became Palo Alto High School before being renamed Palo Alto College in 1916 when Claremont Colleges merged into Stanford University
