Morgan Hill is a small town located in San Mateo County, California on the east side of the Bay Bridge. The population was 6,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Morgan Hill were Juan Bautista de Anza and his expedition in 1777. They named it Playa del Carmen after one of their favorite beaches in Mexico City. In 1838, American Captain John Leland sighted land to the north from where he thought he had been sailing for years when he saw a line of trees that looked like they had grown from nowhere In 1865, George Hearst founded what would become Hearst Castle on top of hill just south of town. He also built some small houses there which are still standing today including Mrs. Hearst's home on Pacific Avenue which she occupied until her death in 1947. In 1922, Morgan Hill became an incorporated city with 30 square miles (76 km2). The population grew rapidly as people moved into new subdivisions near the docks and factories that sprang up during World War II during the post-war boom period. During this time many businesses closed or went out of business due to high competition within and outside Silicon Valley; however, Morgan Hill continued to grow economically and achieve city status by 2030
