Morgan Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 23,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Morgan Hill is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Daly City to the north and Hayward to the east. The first Europeans to visit what is now Morgan Hill were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Sebastián Vizcaíno on November 7, 1542 when they journeyed from Mexico City through Santa Cruz Island into Monterey Bay. They named it after Mount Diablo where they saw "a very high mountain". A grant of 640 acres (250 hectares) was given by Governor Manuel Nieto to Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1787 for his services during King George III's War against Spain. In 1839, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill which became one of history's largest mills outside of England or America. The town site was surveyed by Elias Jahn in 1846 and purchased from him by Captain Wm Hurlbut of Portsmouth, NH in 1850 who named it for himself: "Hillsborough" (after Hillsborough County in England). The first post office opened on February 12, 1849 with Wm Hurlbut as its first clerk. In 1861acers built a millrace called the Pacheco Grade that ran along present Day Highway 24 between Old Fourth Street and Middle Creek Road nearpresent day Eastshore Drive/Broadway Boulevard northwest of downtown Morgan Hill; today’s routing would lead northeast from I-680 just past Hayward International Airport across Interstate 580 then southeast onto Broadway Boulevard before terminating at Uptown Avenue southwest of downtown Berkeley Springs BART Station). Morgan Hill is a small city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 21,872 at the 2010 census. Morgan Hill is known for its large and well-preserved Chinese Garden, which was donated to the city by the China National Construction Corporation in 1928. Other attractions include Pacheco Park and nearby shopping malls. The area now known as Morgan Hill was first populated by Native Americans who hunted deer and other animals hereabouts. There are references to a “Morgenhill” in drawings dating back to 1623. A post office called Morgenhill was established in 1842, but no town sprang up until 1868 when Hildebrandt & Co., merchants, erected a frame store on what is now First Street near the present site of City Hall. It became one of Contra Costa County’s leading businesses with its second store located on Third St., west of Main Street (now part of Union Square). In 1871 Hildebrandt sold out his interest in the business to Wm. Sutter & Son and continued as an unincorporated agent for another decade or so before finally dying suddenly at his home on Fourth St., east of Main Street, on January 2nd, 1875 just prior tooma election day! His son John Wm. Sutter took over the business from him and it continued under his father’s ownership until 1913 when it passed into the hands of local resident Harry Sheehan who operated it successfully until 1948 when it became part of Morgan Hill plc.-a national company incorporated that year-although still privately held! In 1880 local resident George Brown started construction on what would become City Hall-later renamed City Hall Annex after Brown’s death in 1902-and soon enough he had built a frame building which housed both his mercantile enterprise as well as various public services such as courts and jailing facilities for county inmates during periods of emergency. The annex also served as storage facilities for City Hall materials until 1906 when Mayor James Rolph convened a meeting pursuant to Chapter 5984 (Stats.)of An act entitled an ordinance amending § 5984 (a) of The Municipal Code relating thereto; at which time Mayor Rolph designated University Avenue between Third and Fourth Streets (then Broadway) as “City Way” within this Limits; thereby providing convenient access by streetcars from City Hall garage directly to University Avenue! In 1916 Councilman John Fenton combined efforts with Planning Commissioner Walter Haas Jr., Unitarian Minister Nelsons Chapel School Board member Ethel Parsons etcetera…)to erect new Community House blocks northward from alley off alley east side then southward along alley up hill past current site today corner First Street/Union Square where old schoolhouse stood long ago
