In 1969, the United States Air Force deployed a gift to Morro Bay, California in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of theend of World War II. The gift was a Spitfire Mk V fighter plane and its associated gear. The aircraft arrived at the airport on November 12, 1969 and was ceremoniously unloaded by General John J. Pershing III from an RAF transport aircraft. The Spitfire had been donated by Sir Francis Drake in memory of his late father Admiral Sir Geoffrey Drake who had also fought in World War II as a Royal Navy pilot. The gift was an important symbol of American support for Britain during the war and it is now one of Morro Bay's most popular tourist attractions. Today, the Spitfire remains a prized relic for Morro Bay residents and visitors alike and its visit each year brings much fun and excitement to town centre streetside stalls throughout December!

Morro Bay is a small town located in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 3,531 at the 2010 census. Morro Bay is part of the Morro Bay–Lompoc Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is home to Morro Bay High School and the Morro Castle State Historic Park. The first European settlers in what would become Morro Bay were Dutch voyageurs who explored the area in 1602-03. In 1769, Spanish traders founded a mission near present-day Morro Bay after finding gold and other valuable minerals there. Because of its strategic location on both sides of Monterey Strait, as well as its fertile soil, Mission San Miguel de Anza attracted numerous people from throughout California during the 18th century. In 1847, following Mexican annexation of California, Masons Lodge #1 opened a Masonic lodge at what is now known as White Sands Missile Range in nearby Point Conception (now Redondo Beach). This allowed for continued trade with Mexico City and helped spur development within what would become San Luis Obispo County. Although most of the early growth took place outside ofmorro bay proper, activity within the town gradually increased until it reached its peak around 1880-1890 when about 2,000 residents lived here. However by 1920 only 100-300 residents remained in morro bay proper while most citizens resided elsewhere within sanluis obispo county During World War II many local businesses participated in manufacturing munitions needed for the war effort including aircraft production plants at Point Conception Naval Air Station (later NASDAQ: POINT) and Santa Barbara Airport (SBAR), which became known as "the Navy's Back Door." Many farmers also participated in wartime agriculture through horticulture or land farming methods; however some lost their homes or livelihoods due to bombing or other enemy actions during World War II
