There has been an army garrison in Morro Bay since the late 1800s. The first military presence on the peninsula was a small detachment of California Volunteers under Lieutenant Colonel James P. Hickey in 1848. This unit was withdrawn in 1851 and disbanded. In 1860, the California Battalion of Artillery arrived at Morro Bay and began garrisoning the fortifications. The battalion was redesignated as Company A, 1st Battalion, California Volunteer Infantry in 1862 and later Companies B-1 and B-2 also served with distinction during the Civil War. When hostilities ceased on April 9, 1865, Company A remained at Morro Bay until its disbandment in 1865. During its time here, it lost one killed and three wounded; most of which were from Company B’s Mortar Battery which had also fought in the war. In 1898, new company headquarters were established here at Fort Ross after troops were transferred from San Francisco for World War I. troop movement stopped again until 1931 when finally all active duty troops left for deployment to Japan following World War II. The last military presence ended when soldiers turned their weapons down due to low morale following World War II; however there are still a few cannons that can be seen around town today if you look closely enough!

Morro Bay is a census-designated place in Santa Barbara County, California, United States. The population was 5,832 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Morro Bay is located on Morro Bay Bridge and has a ferry terminal. The first Europeans to visit what is now Morro Bay were Spanish explorers who landed there in 1602 during the travels of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo. The name “Morro” means "moor" or "hill" in Spanish and was given to the peninsula because of its jagged cliffs which form an outline like a Moorish fortress. The name's meaning evolved over time from this early sighting into one that emphasizes the beauty of the bay, including its crystal clear water and white sand beaches. In 1824, Mexican Commodore Manuel Micheltorena discovered gold along with other minerals at Isla de la Juventud (Island of Youth). As a result of this discovery, land grants were made for many people in and around Morro Bay including James Irvine who founded Irvine Ranch and built numerous homes there between 1849-1853; Isaac Newton Packard who developed his Strathroy Mine; Wirt Hite who developed his Hite Estate near Redondo Beach; Augustus Saint John Woodbury who settled down at Refugio beach; Jens Jensen Nielsen who founded Jensen's Lighthouse on Point Conception Island; and Captain George Vancouver whose ship Discovery foundered off San Miguel Inlet on July 4th 1795 while searching for new land northward across Cape Horn. After disembarking their crew ashore at Trestle Bank they continued their journey by sea northwestward until they reached Juan Fernández Strait where they heard about vast amounts of gold hidden beneath snow cover within Chile's Andes mountains. paddlewheel steamship passengers arrived from Atcheson's Landing on December 12th 1848 bringing over 1 million acres (500 km²) worth of gold dust to marketplaces all over North America including Denver & Salt Lake City where it was sold for $US 100 per ton! This discovery led directly to organized mining operations throughout California as soon as 1850 when prospectors discovered veins both high up in inaccessible mountains as well as deep inside caverns below surface level making it possible to extract significant quantities even after months or years without rainfall! In 1862–1863 Lieutenant William Moulton Marsteller charted much Of What Is Now Santa Barbara County while working undercover with Ulysses S Grant’s Union Army during the American Civil War under false pretenses as part of OperationCrossroads which aimed to secure supply lines through Mexico back home for General Ulysses S Grant’s main army fighting against Confederate forces attacking from Texas etc...On March 25 1865 he sighted Playa del Rey Harbor east side about midway between Point Conception Island northeast corner towards Big Sur then north side about midway between Hermosa Beach northerly point outcropping Coast Range foothills thence easterly due west to current location...He named it “MoroBay” after Punta Cana Gulf which he supposed would be nearer by since he had just entered upon surveys...Since no vessels could enter or leave harbor due tide conditions preventing launches up said harbor--Marsteller anchored his vessel yards away running aground.....(Source: History Online - US Naval Museum)

The Mormons were trying to start a new religious colony in what is now San Francisco, and the Native Americans fought back fiercely. Over time, the Indians withdrew from the area, and the mission system grew stronger. In 1853, voters in Morro Bay approved a small town charter with five streets and a population of fifteen people. That same year, an American airship made its first trip over Morro Bay, providing tourists with their first taste of high-altitude aviation.
