Morro Bay is a small, unincorporated community in San Luis Obispo County, California, on the eastern coast of the US state of California. It was founded by Juan Bautista Morongo on December 12, 1836 as part of the Morro Bay Mission. The first post office at Morro Bay was established in 1840. The present town was organized in 1907 and is located on the eastern edge of San Luis Obispo County. The Morro Bay post office closed on January 17, 1969.
On September 17, 1847, Mexico ceded California to the United States for $14 million. The area now known as Morro Bay was part of Imperial County. On October 21, 1848, the first post office in Morro Bay opened with three letters and one postcard from San Francisco. The community began to grow slowly but steadily as pioneers arrived to settle the land. In 1869, a store and hotel were built in Morro Bay by Elisha Pease and his brother-in-law Wm. Baxter. By 1889, there were twenty businesses in town with a population of 1,500 residents. In 1915, the state government purchased some of the land around Morro Bay for use as an airfield for Los Angeles Air Force Base. In 1933, when World War II began, the military closed down Los Angeles Airport and said that all planes destined for or arriving at Morro Bay should fly over Long Beach instead. However, many locals objected to this decision and formed a group called Save Our Airfields which lobbied unsuccessfully against the closure of LA Airport. The airport reopened in 1945 after it was transferred from World War II control to Army Air Forces Commandve Fort MacArthur in Malibu Hills., California
