Morro Bay is named after an Isla de Santa Rosa offshore island which was sighted by Captain James Cook in 1778 during his exploration of British North America. The first post office in Morro Bay opened on December 12, 1853. The townsite name may be derived from Spanish "muro" meaning “fortress” or "hill" and "bay" meaning “ territorial sea” or “shoreline”. At one time there were more than 20 businesses including a millinery school, a fish market and several livery stable operations. In 1898 it became part of Redwood City when that city annexed Marin County. The downtown area includes three blocks of Commercial Street and two blocks of Second Street between Main and G Streets NW cornering First Avenue NW. Other significant streets include: Elm Drive NE & SW; Third Avenue NE & SW; Market Street SE & NW; Adobe Road NE & NW; Ascot Way NE & NW (a shopping center).
