The earliest recorded mention of coffee in Morro Bay comes from a document from 1802. At that time, coffee was still being grown as a crop in small plots near San Francisco. By 1825, however, large plantations had been established in the area, and coffee began to be grown commercially. In 1853, Morro Bay became part of California and Coffee production increased significantly. Today, Morro Bay is home to one of the largest coffeeshops on the Peninsula – The Coffee House – which has been serving up great fresh roasted coffee since 1978.

The Morro Bay Coffee Company was founded in 1912 by the brothers Harry and John C. Brown. The company produced roasted coffee from their roastery on Morro Bayou, located in San Luis Obispo County, California. In 1935, the Brown family sold the business to the Harney and Wigglesworth Coffee Company. In 1951, the company merged with another San Luis Obispo-based coffee company, The American Coffee Corporation. That same year, the Harney and Wigglesworth Coffee Company merged with Dutch Bros., creating a large Dutch-owned coffee chain that continued operations until 1984 when it emerged as Starbucks Incorporated.

However, as demand for coffee grew, roasting methods began to change. In the1800s, people started using small presses to roast their own coffee. This allowed for a finer grind and increased flavor because of how these small machines were designed. Additionally, in 1853, John Quincy Adams became the first U.S. President to have his own private plantation where he brewed his own coffee in secret. In 1902, Dutchman Cornelis Lenoir founded one of the first large-scale roasted coffee companies in America with over 100 employees roast and package their beans all over the United States. The Lenoir company continued growing until it merged with Jardine & Matheson in 1964. From then on, both Jardine & Matheson and their respective brands fell into disrepair and eventually ceased operations (though some reopened under different ownership). Throughout this time period there were several other large-scale roasters such as Hearst Corporation (which owned a major market share) that also ceased operations due to health concerns or financial problems (though some continue today). However, while much has changed since these old days when fresh roasted coffee was often adulterated with cheaper oils or chemicals, there has been an outpouring of interest in quality Coffees throughout 2018 and beyond! The Morro Bay Naval Shipyard was a naval shipbuilding complex located in Morro Bay, California, United States during World War II. The facility produced ships for the US Navy and other Allied navies. It also produced submarines, air-defense missiles and aircraft carriers. Construction of the naval shipyard began in 1942 under Project Signet and continued through 1945 as part of the Second World Waravy Program. The total cost of the program was $27 million dollars. The project involved design, construction and commissioning of six navy ships: USS "Morro Bay" (AO-10), USS "Flamingo" (AS-8), USS "Cimarron" (AK-9), USS "Palo Alto" (AP-7) and USS "Oklahoma City". All six vessels were built at the Morro Bay Naval Shipyard with help from local companies such as National Electric Boat Corporation and Kaiser Aluminum Industries. After completion they were transferred to various ports around the world where they served as training Ships for sailors new to submarine service or those returning home after serving in combat zones. USS "Flamingo", which was first constructed at the Morro Bay Naval Shipyard, played a significant role in saving many lives during World War II when she operated as an airship hangar on Mount Shasta then served as an airbase for Operation Neptune's Spear providing aerial support for ground troops campaigns in Malaya and Burma during 1944–1945. She is today preserved at Maritime Museum of San Diego inside the old Coast Guard Station building next to Pier 24 across from County Building #2 & 3
The Morro Bay area was part of the old missions and Spanish settlements in San Diego County. The first mission, Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion, was founded in 1769. It was destroyed by a fire in 1821. A second mission, San Francisco de Asís, was founded in 1795 and burned down in 1828. A third mission, La Purísima Concepcion, was built in 1834 and served as the finalMission San Diego until its closure in 1946. In 1862, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered the construction of Fort Point on the beach at Morro Bay to protect the harbor from possible English attack. The fort grew gradually into a large military installation with numerous buildings and an arsenal. In 1886, it became known as Fort Lewis after Rear Admiral George Dewey who commanded United States Marines during World War II at nearby Balboa Naval Base. During World War II American forces used Morro Bay as an airfield for Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to destroy Japanese forces located near Baja California Sur
