The first Europeans to visit Morro Bay were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769. The town was established by Captain George Meares in 1872 as an agricultural community on the banks of the bay. The name Morro Bay came from a nearby cape that juts out into the bay.

Morro Bay is a small town in Alameda County, California, United States. It is located on the eastern shore of Morro Bay and is bounded by the towns of Hayward and Oakland to the south, Fremont to the east, and Richmond to the north. The population was 12,079 at the 2010 census. The history of Morro Bay goes back to 1853 when Captain George A. Smith landed his ship "Aurora" here after sailing from San Francisco bound for Santa Cruz with goods he had bought from Native Americans. The first permanent settler in Morro Bay was John Fenton who arrived in 1855. He named his settlement after Spanish saint Miserere which translates as "bay of love". Fenton's son-in-law, Wm. Hannon also settled in Morro Bay in 1861. They built a small wooden store on what is now State Route 1A just south of where it meets US 101 (now I-880). In 1865 they donated land for a new school district that would later become Alameda County. In 1868 two friends named Edward Jepson and Samuel Morse built a small cabin on what is now State Route 1B about one mile southeast of their original location near present day Hayward Avenue and Brannan Street (). Morse became interested in oil exploration downriver and sent an exploratory party upriver under the guidance of Jepson which returned safe and sound with petroleum products on December 6, 1869 - making him America's first successful oil explorer! Soon thereafter other entrepreneurs began leasing or purchasing tracts around this area for oil production; among these were Alfred Purdy (1875), George Sperry (1878), Harry Pratt (1881), John Drysdale (1887), James Meehan (1989) Morse sold all his rights to development rights in 1886 but continued to serve as President & CEO until his death ten years later.. Upon his death control passed through his son Samuel Jr.'s hands until 1999 when it was acquired by ChevronTexaco Americas Incorporated who continue its operations today as part of ChevronMobil
Morro Bay was originally named "Cabo Rojo" by the Spanish. The name is derived from the cape that forms the bay's southern edge. The first European to visit Morro Bay was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who landed on Isla San Diego in 1542. In 1821, Mexican revolutionaries founded a rancho at Morro Bay and called it Rancho de la Bahia de los dos Reyes (Rancho of the Harbor of Two Kings). In 1848, California became a United States territory and Morro Bay became part of Alameda County.
